BOSTON GLOBE COVERUP?

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on an article in yesterday's Boston Globe:

Yesterday, Boston Globe reporter Kevin Cullen said that Pope John Paul II "presided over a church that was guilty of one of the biggest institutional coverups of criminal activity in history." He also gave credence to the charge that "Priests were raping children all over the world with impunity." There are four errors in these two sentences.

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice report on this issue shows very clearly that the period when most of the incidents occurred was 1960-1985. Since John Paul II was not elected until 1978, it is factually wrong to suggest that the scandal took place mostly on his watch.

Charol Shakeshaft, the nation's leading authority on the sexual abuse of minors in education, estimates that the rate of abuse in the public schools is approximately 100 times greater than found in the Catholic Church. Since most of those cases were never reported to the police, and since most of the offending teachers were moved from one school district to another, it is factually wrong to suggest that the Catholic Church has had a bigger problem with this issue than the public schools. Indeed, there is no evidence that the rate of abuse is any different in the Catholic Church than exists in other institutions, religious or secular.

It is factually wrong to say that most of those abused by priests were raped: the most common infraction was "inappropriate touching."

Most of those abused by priests were not children—they were postpubescent males. The John Jay report found that "81 percent [of the victims] were male," and that "more than three-quarters of the victims were post pubescent, meaning the abuse did not meet the clinical definition of pedophilia." Amazingly, Cullen wrote this in 2004, so even he knows that the problem is homosexuality!

It's hard to say whether Cullen is simply wrong on the facts, or whether he is the one engaged in a coverup. Maybe a little of both.

  1. Bill Donahue should be forgiven because he can't read. If someone could please read this to him, that would be helpful:

    Bullet 1:

1)The John Jay College was hired by the Catholic church, and got its information from diocese records, not from an investigation, so of course, it didn't show the true level of the crimes. For example, it says that 4% of priests are pedophiles, but it includes ones that had only been priests for a year at the time of the study. If you look at only the priests that were there for the full 32 years, the number is a whopping 10%, and that only includes the ones that the diocese has records for.

    2) Kevin Cullen said John Paul II was guilty of the cover up. The crimes were committed from 1960-1985, and JP2 came in 1978, so he had at least 7 years to condone shuffling known pedophile priests, and then 24 years to cover up until the news really broke in 2002.

    Bullet 2:

Bill borrowed every 4 year old's technique of saying "look over there instead of at me". Where are these statistics? Wikipedia points to real live statistics, cases, names and numbers about Catholics. Let's see the same about anyone else. The rapes aren't there, and the cover-up isn't there.

    Bullet 3:

Read the Philadelphia Grand Jury report at http://www.philadelphiadistrictattorney.com/images/Grand_Jury_Report.pdf

A quote from Page 2, "We should begin by making one thing clear. When we say abuse, we don’t just mean “inappropriate touching” (as the Archdiocese often chose to refer to it). We mean rape. Boys who were raped orally, boys who were raped anally, girls who were raped vaginally.

On page 25, Nicolas Cudemo was "transferred each time because of what were recorded in Archdiocese files as “particular friendships” with girls." To see what “particular friendships” are, on with girls. On Page 147, he ejaculated into the mouth of Ruth. When she was 9 years old. Page 135, he got her pregnant. When she was 11 years old. That's really inappropriate touching, Bill.

    Bullet 4:

A Catholic standard - he says it isn't pedophilia. Technically, that stops at age 12. So if your son was anally raped at age 13 by a Catholic priest, you can't call the priest a pedophile. These days, that's a Catholic church victory.
