Debating the Holocaust: A New Look at Both Sides By Thomas Dalton

In this remarkable, balanced book, the author skillfully reviews and compares "traditional" and "revisionist" views on the "The Holocaust."

On one side is the traditional, orthodox view -- six million Jewish casualties, gas chambers, cremation ovens, mass graves, and thousands of witnesses. On the other is the view of a small band of skeptical writers and researchers, often unfairly labeled "deniers," who contend that the public has been gravely misled about this emotion-laden chapter of history.

The author establishes that the arguments and findings of revisionist scholars are substantive, and deserve serious consideration. He points out, for example, that even the eminent Jewish Holocaust scholar Raul Hilberg acknowledged that there was no budget, plan or order by Hitler for a World War II program to exterminate Europe's Jews.

This book is especially relevant right now, as "Holocaust deniers" are routinely and harshly punished for their "blasphemy," and as growing numbers of people regard the standard, Hollywoodized "Holocaust" narrative with mounting suspicion and distrust.

The author of this book, who writes under the pen name of "Thomas Dalton," is an American scholar who holds a doctoral degree from a major US university.

This is no peripheral debate between arcane views of some obscure aspect of twentieth century history. Instead, this is a clash with profound social-political implications regarding freedom of speech and press, the manipulation of public opinion, how our cultural life is shaped, and how power is wielded in our society.

"Israelis know the Haitian rescue is just for propaganda"

Haiti: An Israeli Public Relations Moment?
Written by Benjamin Joffe-Walt
Published Wednesday, January 20, 2010

http://www.themedialine.org/news/news_detail.asp?NewsID=27779

Excerpt:

Israel has without question been in dire need of an image makeover.

Israel sent more than 200 Israeli doctors, nurses, soldiers and volunteers to Haiti soon after the gravity of the damage in Haiti became apparent. Within two days of arriving, the Israeli delegation had set up a field hospital, administered emergency medical aid from the Port-au-Prince stadium and rescued over a dozen living survivors from collapsed buildings.

Jewish state's rapid and extensive response has hardly gone unnoticed by the country's media, diplomats and foreign advocates. Updates from Israel's delegation in Haiti have been sent regularly to hundreds of Israeli and foreign journalists via email, video, blogs and social networking sites.

Journalists were even sent a video of ZAKA volunteers somewhat unsuccessfully leading a group of Haitians in singing the Jewish song "Heveinu Shalom Aleichem", literally meaning "We have brought peace upon you."

But while praising Israel's response, critics say Israeli attempts to accent their aid to Haiti have been over-the-top, and accuse Israeli public relations officials of exploiting the disaster for political ends.

"The extreme right wing in Israel is using the Haiti operation to reframe the fallout from the Goldstone report in the eyes of the world," Dr Yoel Donchin, an Israeli anesthesiologist and a veteran of Israeli rescue operations told The Media Line. "They know the Haitians are not part of the agenda and this is just for propaganda. But if it's good for Israel they don't care."

"You can't save everyone, and anyone who has studied mass casualty situations knows that the first thing you have to do is not rush in but to send a small team to evaluate what is the best way to help in the long run," he said. "So the fact that Israel wants to race to be the first to be there means nothing in the big picture, because Israel is usually the first to arrive but also the first to leave." "If, for example, Israel were to bring water purification systems and chemical toilets it would be much more helpful," Dr Donchin said. "But their logic is that then it wouldn't get on the news."

Dr Donchin told of an incident in which the head of one of the delegations to a disaster area was asked to move oxygen tanks and doctors to make room for an additional TV crew, and argued that Israel had become a state that "insists on performing a good deed each day and helping the old lady cross the road, even against her will. "Like Everest climbers, Israel places her national flag at the peak to prove that the site has been conquered," Dr Donchin wrote in a Tuesday opinion piece in Israel's leading Hebrew news site YNet. "To publicize this physical achievement, media representatives, photographers, Israeli Defense Forces Spokespeople and others are brought along with the delegation." "Are we going to see the commander of the Israeli delegation on the evening news beside a compound with 500 chemical toilets? Unlikely," he wrote. "It is much more "media friendly" to show an Israeli hospital, Stars of David and of course the staff of dedicated doctors and nurses wearing their uniforms with an Israeli flag on the lapel."

600 readers responded to the article in its first 24 hours online and a number of other Israeli publications ran opinion pieces Monday and Tuesday accusing Israel of using the disaster for publicity points or of ignoring a humanitarian disaster on the country's front step in Gaza.

U.S. indicts four Israelis in international bribery case

U.S. indicts four Israelis in international bribery case
By Yossi Melman and Natasha Mozgovaya,
Haaretz Correspondents, and The Associated Press

The United States Justice Department indicted four Israeli businessmen Tuesday for allegedly attempting to bribe the defense minister of an African country in order to secure a multimillion-dollar contract to supply his country with military equipment. 18 other businessmen were indicted in the same case.

The U.S. Department of Justice identified the Israelis as Ofer Paz, 50 - the president and chief executive officer of an Israeli company, Paz Logistics, that acts as sales agent for companies in the law enforcement and military products industries; Haim Geri, 50 - the president of a North Miami Beach, Fla., company that serves as a sales agent for companies in the law enforcement and military products industries; Yochanan R. Cohen, aka Yochi Cohen, 47 - the chief executive officer of a San Francisco company that manufactures security equipment, including body armor and ballistic plates; and Israel Wissler, former CEO of the company Ayit which sold equipment to the Israeli Defense Forces.

Twenty-one of the businessmen, including the Israelis, were arrested in Las Vegas on the eve of a major annual military equipment sales show, following a two-and-a-half-year FBI undercover sting operation.

The defendants allegedly agreed to pay a 20 percent commission to an undercover FBI agent who posed as the African minister.

The indictments allege conspiracy and substantive violations of the corrupt practices act and conspiracy to engage in money laundering.

The charges relating to the corrupt practices act carry a maximum five-year prison sentence on conviction. The maximum sentence for money laundering conspiracy is 20 years.

The case is the largest single investigation and prosecution of individuals in the history of the 1977 U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which bars bribery of foreign government officials. It is also the first large-scale use of an undercover operation in enforcing the corrupt practices act

Critics accuse Israel of exploiting the disaster in Haiti

HAITI: AN ISRAELI PUBLIC RELATIONS MOMENT?

Critics accuse Israel of exploiting the disaster in Haiti for public diplomacy.

It's been a tough year for Israeli public diplomacy.

In the aftermath of the Gaza war, for over 12 months the Jewish state has been slammed by international media, think tanks, rights organizations and the United Nations.

Ambassadors have been recalled from Tel Aviv, arrest warrants have been issued for senior Israeli politicians and leaders, a Holocaust survivor led a fast for Gaza, dozens of human rights reports on Israel's conduct in the war have been widely distributed and the international campaigns to launch boycotts and sanctions against Israel have seen measured success.

Israel has without question been in dire need of an image makeover.

They got it: for better or worse, Israel has received its public relations knight in shining armor in the form of an earthquake in Haiti.

Exclusive Interview With Nobel Laureate Joseph Stiglitz

HuffPost Interviews Joseph Stiglitz: 'We're More Strict With Our Poor Than With Our Banks'

January 20, 2010
During the economic turmoil of the last few years, Nobel Prize-winning economist and Columbia University professor Joseph Stiglitz has been one of the most strident and incisive critics of the historic bailout of the banking sector.

Never one to mince words, Stiglitz, who served as the Chief Economist at the World Bank and on President Clinton's Council of Economic Advisers, has said the meltdown has resulted in a kind of "ersatz capitalism" in America. He has also repeatedly called for a second round of fiscal stimulus to support struggling Americans.

We recently sat down with Professor Stiglitz to discuss his new book "Freefall: America, Free Markets And The Sinking of The World Economy", and how the Obama administration should go about reshaping our economy.

With so much talk of a recovery, where is our economy right now?

The way I put it is that, if you look back before the crisis, the American economy was basically supported by a housing bubble, which supported a consumption boom. In one year, we had $950 billion in mortgage equity withdrawals. That got reflected in the statistics and our savings rate went to zero.

The implication is that post-crisis, even if we have our banking system work, it is not likely that we will go back to a zero savings rate in the U.S. If we don't go back to a zero savings rate, it's going to be hard to have a robust recovery unless you find something else to fill in the gap.

THE BRUTAL UGLINESS OF THE ISRAELI MENTALITY KNOWS NO LIMITS

THE BRUTAL UGLINESS OF THE ISRAELI MENTALITY KNOWS NO LIMITS

Beyond chutzpah

By Khalid Amayreh in occupied Palestine

The brutal ugliness of the collective Israeli mentality seems to know no limits. Indeed, one wouldn't go too far by arguing that the patterns of Israeli behaviors, nearly at all levels, reflect a real mental sickness.

In recent days, three observations of Israeli behaviors  attracted my attention.

First, the Ayalon affair. Last week, Israeli Deputy-Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon called in the Turkish ambassador to reprimand him over a TV program that showed Israeli agents abducting children and shooting old men, an indisputably routine practice by the Israeli occupation army in both the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

A Jewish supremacist,  Ayalon seated the Turkish ambassador Ahmet Oguz Celikkol on a chair lower than his own chair, ostensibly to humiliate him and show him "who  the master is."

He actually instructed a host of cameramen he had invited to "cover" the event to focus on the "inferiority"  of the Turk vis-Ă -vis himself and the contemptible treatment meted out to the Turkish diplomat.

Ayalon is not an amateur diplomat. He has more than 20 years of experience of diplomatic service. He is also a former ambassador to the United States. Hence, the sickening conduct on his part can't be explained away by citing inexperience.

The only explanation for Ayalon's behavior is that he is suffering from a combination of mental disorder including  superiority complex, megalomania, self-inflated ego and self-absorbedness. These are serious morbid psychotic behavior. If untreated, there is a serious risk that next time, Ayalon would physically assault a foreign diplomat. Even a more scandalous feat can be expected. We are talking about insolent people who are mentally sick to the bones.

Ayalon is also an irredeemable, pathological liar. He claimed he didn't really mean it and that he hadn't preplanned the entire episode. "It would have worked perfectly had it not been for the media which blew it out of proportion," said the sick thug who was eventually forced to formally apologize to Turkey for his idiotic misdeed.

Now, he says that the next time a foreign government criticizes Israel's genocidal terror against the Palestinian people, Israel would expel the ambassador of that country. In other words, Ayalon believes that Israel, unlike any other country on earth,  should be beyond criticism. So, the message is clear. "The next time Israel carries out a genocidal campaign and murders thousands of Palestinian or Lebanese children, no country should dare criticize the Jewish state."

Well, the problem with Ayalon is that he epitomizes the brutal ugliness and cruelty of the overall Israeli mindset. What is more awful is that this morbid mentality is taking over Israel, its army, politicians and general discourse.

With this in mind, an Israeli journalist noted a few weeks ago that Israel in its entirety needs to seek treatment at a mental asylum. That asylum must be very huge, indeed, and would have to work 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 30 days per month and 365 days per year.

My second observation has to do with Israel's highlighted efforts to help the quake-stricken Haiti overcome the post-quake disaster. The Israeli and pro-Israeli media has been celebrating the Israeli decision to dispatch rescuers and relief materials to help the people of Haiti cope with the mega disaster.

Well, helping people is always a good and commendable act of charity. And it doesn't matter where that help comes from as long it is motivated by good will, selflessness  and a sincere desire to help.

However, when the real aim is to divert attention away from a huge crime, and when the supposedly charitable act is motivated more by public relations consideration and less by genuine human concerns, the first thing that comes to ones mind is the word "hypocrisy."

Well, what Israel did to the people of Gaza is very much still fresh in everyone's memory. Israel last year and for 21 consecutive days rained death on hundreds of thousands of innocent children and other civilians, murdering more than 1400 human beings, including more than 330 children. Several thousand civilians were injured, maimed and incinerated by the deadly clouds of white phosphorus. Moreover, as many as 40 thousand homes were completely or partially destroyed. This is in addition to the wanton pornographic bombing of mosques, schools, and public buildings.

The Israeli army used its all its weapons of death, including  the American state-of-the-art  technology of death, against a helpless people who lacked the ability to protect themselves and their children. Israel did what it did knowingly and deliberately. In short, Israel committed genocidal crimes against humanity against a helpless, unprotected people.

And until this moment, Israel is still refusing to allow building materials to reach these tormented human beings and enable them to rebuild their homes. The reason is none other than the fact that Israelis and many Jews draw satisfaction from seeing Gazans suffer.

So, it is really difficult to believe that the Israeli relief efforts in Haiti are motivated by genuine human considerations. If they were, Israel would lift the suffocating siege now imposed on the people of Gaza for the third consecutive year, all because Gaza had dared elect a government that Israel and the US didn't like.

In the final analysis, it is an expression of hypocrisy and moral duplicity to brag about rescuing efforts in Port-O-Prance when you have just buried hundreds of children under the rubble of their own homes in Gaza City, Khan Younis and Rafah.

The third and final observation is really disgusting in a special way. The Israeli electronic and print media has been using photos of Palestinian orphans whose parents and relatives have been murdered by the Israeli army in advertisements designed to raise money for "poor and Jewish children."

One photo of a crying, bedraggled and distraught-looking girl is used widely to appeal to potential donors to donate money in order to feed hungry Jewish children.

What is strange about this is that the very same picture happens to be of a Palestinian child whose father was killed in Beit Lahya in the northern Gaza Strip during the genocidal Israeli onslaught last year.

This is more than disgusting. It is comparable to Nazis using photos or images of their victims to raise money for legitimate German causes.  This act, coming from a state that continues to impose a hermetic, suffocating siege on the people and relatives of the child in question is just beyond Chutzpah.

This is why, the brutal ugliness of the Israeli mentality knows no limits.

Descendants of Göring, Eichmann speak out in Israeli documentary - Israel Culture, Ynetnews

Descendants of Göring, Eichmann speak out in Israeli documentary

In 'Hitler's Children', descendants of most powerful figures in Nazi regime discuss natural admiration children have toward their parents and their innate revulsion of their crimes. Director Chanoch Zeevi finds 'fascinating similarities' between children of the second generation of the Holocaust on both sides, the perpetrators and the victims

Helen Hatzis

Published:  01.19.10, 15:19 / Israel Culture

More than sixty years after World War II, a small group of German men and women are coming to grips with the crimes of their fathers, uncles, and grandfathers. Israeli director Chanoch Zeevi engages us with the descendants of the most powerful figures in the Nazi regime, who were left a legacy that permanently associates them with one of the greatest crimes in history.

Adolf Hitler did not have children. Joseph Goebbels and his family died in Hitler's bunker. But what of the families of Hermann Göring, Heinrich Himmler and Adolf Eichmann, to name a few? How have their descendants dealt with the legacy left by their notorious families -- those who still recall whispered conversations between their parents and, in some instances, still remember a pat on the head from the Führer himself?

Controversial Documentary
Oliver Stone says Hitler an 'easy scapegoat' / Reuters
American director's upcoming Showtime documentary promises to put mass-murderers 'in context'. According to Stone, 'Stalin, Hitler, Mao and McCarthy have been vilified pretty thoroughly by history'
Full Story

In his documentary film Hitler's Children, the descendants discuss the delicate balance they have reached as they negotiate between the natural admiration that children have toward their parents and their innate revulsion of their crimes. We not only hear their stories but we witness their rapprochement, and the fact that their family names alone evoke horror.

What is it like for them to have grown up with a name that immediately raises images of murder and genocide? How have they coped with the fact that they are the murderers' children?

Till now, they have lived quietly, trying to rebuild their lives without the constant reminders of what their ancestors did. Only now are they ready to bare the scars that their legacy has left them.

Niklas Frank, son of Hans Frank and godson of Adolf Hitler, despises his father's past and spent much of his adult life researching and writing about him. A journalist by trade, he composed a controversial series of articles about his feelings which later became the basis of an even more controversial book, In the Shadow of the Reich, addressed directly to the man (his father) he describes as a "slime-hole of a Hitler fanatic." Today he lectures about his infamous father to young people in the former East Germany, some of whom are falling under the influence of local neo-Nazis.

Bettina Göring, a descendent of Hermann Göring, lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico where she practices herbal medicine. Her neighbors on either side are Jewish, and because they are constantly quarreling with one another, she is often called in to use her charm and humor to reconcile them. Who would have thought sixty years ago that a Göring would use 'charm and humor' to resolve the differences between feuding Jewish neighbors? Both Bettina and her brother had themselves sterilized so as not to pass on the Göring name.

Katrin Himmler, the grand-niece of Heinrich Himmler, married an Israeli Jew – a child of Holocaust survivors.

These are but a few of the descendants that agreed to speak on camera in the compelling film that remains in production. Through email correspondence, Shalom Life contacted director Chanoch Zeevi to discuss his film.

How did this project come to fruition?

The meeting in Munich, on that particular Friday in April 1999, was undoubtedly an event that changed my life. Within the framework of the research for "In the Shadow of the Fuhrer" which I directed, I found myself standing opposite Traudl Junge's front door. For many years she had been the personal secretary of Adolph Hitler. For years she had refused to talk about what she had seen and experienced at Hitler's side during the war and then, surprisingly, she had agreed to meet me, an Israeli director at her home. I remember that as she opened the door, I immediately noticed an old typewriter on a round table covered with a lace table cloth. So many thoughts went through my head, such as "Who knows what instructions and orders had been printed on that machine?" After several tense moments, the conversation became businesslike. Junge told me much about Martin Bormann, the subject of my film, and she gave me names and exact addresses of ex-Nazis who could tell me more about the man, all of which paved the way to the filming which followed.

What was it like discussing this delicate subject with her?

I remember that during the meeting Junge stopped for a moment mid-flow while talking about Hitler's inner circle and showed interest in where I lived in Israel and if I had any children. I found myself taking out photos of my daughters to show her! During our extended meeting, when Junge boasted to me, showing me a photograph of her beside the Fuhrer, I understood that she could not hide her admiration for that man, not even from an Israeli Jew who had come to meet her 55 years later.

This is a difficult subject for anyone, even more so for those in the Jewish community. How were those involved dealing with this intense subject matter?

I believe that it is fate that causes a person to be born as a child of a war criminal -- someone who is responsible for the deaths of so many. To live with the conflict of this man being, on one hand "my father," and on the other a heinous murderer. It is also fate to be born a child of a Holocaust survivor, with all the significance that that brings.

In the course of the different films in which I have been involved, we were concerned with the children of the second generation of the Holocaust on both sides, the perpetrators and the victims. I found fascinating similarities between the two. Neither wanted to talk. The Germans for obvious reasons because of their desire to start new families, without reference to the shady pasts of their families and without removing the skeletons from the closet. On our side, the children of survivors had grown up in homes of people who "had been there" and they too were silent. Their parents had often chosen to bring up their children without the weight of the Holocaust and its atrocities on their shoulders.

I believe that this is the impetus for our project. Over sixty years on and after many years of not wanting and refusing to be filmed, there are children of senior Nazis, from Hitler's inner circle, who are speaking and who are baring their souls in front of the camera. Through the investigatory journey of finding out about the pasts of their fathers, some of them met Holocaust survivors who told them, first hand, their painful point of view about a side of their fathers they had never known.
