BOSTON (CBS 2) -- Thousands of pieces of evidence were released Thursday in the case of the so-called Craigslist Killer, including the words of the accused killer himself.
The evidence provided a chilling insight into the mind of a killer, reports CBS 2's Sean Hennessey.
The family of the New York woman killed never got to see their daughter's killer held accountable. Now, the evidence a jury would have seen was released – enough, prosecutors said, to guarantee Philip Markoff's conviction.
Authorities in Massachusetts released piles of evidence against the accused "Craigslist Killer" – video of the hotel room, hand ties, women's underwear, and audio of the accused killer.
"I didn't tie up and rob anybody," Markoff said.
Philip Markoff talked to Boston police about the robbery and murder of Julia Brisman, a New York woman who took out a Craigslist advertisement for erotic massages.
Police say Markoff met Brisman at a hotel room, where he beat her, robbed her and shot her three times. His image was caught on hotel cameras.
"I'm just asking you, Philip, if you, you know, can find it in yourself to man up and step up if that's you," a detective said during questioning.
Markoff told police that he didn't remember when he was on Craigslist, and he denied knowing about what happened at the hotel.
"I'm listening to what you're saying – it doesn't really apply to me," he said. "You're just telling me a story…I don't have anything to add to it."
Police say the evidence the jury would have seen – had Markoff not killed himself in jail – was overwhelming – a hollowed out medical book where he hid the gun, bullet casings, a knife, the victim's underwear, incriminating emails, disposable phones, even blood on Markoff's shoes.
"There were bloodstains, and they came from the woman he had murdered," Suffolk County, Massachusetts District Attorney Dan Conley said. "He had Julissa Brisman's blood on him, literally, when we took him into custody."
Markoff's fiancé, Megan McAllister, told police the couple had no money and lived off student loans. She said she was startled at the police line of questioning.
"I just, I would never, ever, ever think he would ever do something like that," she said.
When told someone was murdered, McAllister was speechless about being in the dark over Markoff's alleged double-life.
"I mean, is there any reason for me to be scared to go with this person?" she asked.
Prosecutors said the evidence proved their case beyond a reasonable doubt, but the one thing they don't know is the reason behind the crime.
"There was apparently a dark and sinister side to Philip Markoff that he took to his grave," Conley said.
The Brisman family had been pushing for the evidence to be released; their lawyer said there may be grounds for a lawsuit down the line.
