Miep Gies, Protector of Anne Frank, Dies at 100

ReportersNotebook Memo: I would like to know from where Mrs. Gies got food coupons to buy food for the Frank family during their "hide out" during the war.    All of occupied Europe had food shortages.   Every family was given food coupons for one month, they had to give back coupons not used before they were given new food coupons could.

"I am not a hero," insisted Miep Gies. "I was just an ordinary housewife and secretary." It was Mrs. Geis's habit to deflect accolades for defying Nazi occupiers of Amsterdam by helping to hide Anne Frank, her family and three other doomed Jews in a secret annex to the business office of Anne's father, Otto Frank.

But to accept that self-description would be to overlook the remarkable selflessness and courage Mrs. Gies demonstrated, an example so powerful that it continues to inspire nearly 70 years later.

Mrs. Gies, who died on Monday at age 100, was a trusted employee of Otto Frank in 1942. His family went into hiding that year in unused rooms that were hidden behind a movable bookcase, seeking to avoid the fate of thousands of Dutch Jews being deported to concentration camps. Asked by Mr. Frank to help hide them, and to bring them food and supplies, she readily agreed, even though it meant risking her life.

Working with her husband, Jan Gies, a member of the Dutch resistance, and three other employees of Mr. Frank's business, she provided books, emotional support and nourishment. She traveled on her bicycle to spread her food purchases among different grocers in order to avoid suspicion. After the Gestapo raided the hiding place in August 1944, Mrs. Gies made a bold but unsuccessful attempt to bribe Gestapo officials to spare the lives of the eight arrested Jews. She is owed the world's debt for preserving Anne's diary, which she hid unread in the hope that its young author would survive and return to claim it.

Mrs. Gies was the last surviving member of Anne Frank's protectors. Their collective story is an enduring reminder that human beings always have a choice, even when millions were acceding to unspeakable evil.

Debating the Holocaust: A New Look at Both Sides By Thomas Dalton

In this remarkable, balanced book, the author skillfully reviews and compares "traditional" and "revisionist" views on the "The Holocaust."

On one side is the traditional, orthodox view -- six million Jewish casualties, gas chambers, cremation ovens, mass graves, and thousands of witnesses. On the other is the view of a small band of skeptical writers and researchers, often unfairly labeled "deniers," who contend that the public has been gravely misled about this emotion-laden chapter of history.

The author establishes that the arguments and findings of revisionist scholars are substantive, and deserve serious consideration. He points out, for example, that even the eminent Jewish Holocaust scholar Raul Hilberg acknowledged that there was no budget, plan or order by Hitler for a World War II program to exterminate Europe's Jews.

This book is especially relevant right now, as "Holocaust deniers" are routinely and harshly punished for their "blasphemy," and as growing numbers of people regard the standard, Hollywoodized "Holocaust" narrative with mounting suspicion and distrust.

The author of this book, who writes under the pen name of "Thomas Dalton," is an American scholar who holds a doctoral degree from a major US university.

This is no peripheral debate between arcane views of some obscure aspect of twentieth century history. Instead, this is a clash with profound social-political implications regarding freedom of speech and press, the manipulation of public opinion, how our cultural life is shaped, and how power is wielded in our society.

Israel and Turkey at Exchange Diplomatic Blows

Israel and Turkey at Diplomatic Loggerheads

JERUSALEM (Jan. 12) – When you don't have many friends, you usually try hard to keep them. But it seems Israel is doing everything it can to alienate its closest Muslim ally, Turkey.

Turkey today demanded an official apology for what it sees as an insult to its ambassador in Tel Aviv. At issue is an incident yesterday, when Israel's deputy foreign minister, Danny Ayalon, summoned Turkey's ambassador for a diplomatic dressing-down over a Turkish TV series that portrayed Israeli diplomats as the head of a child-abduction ring.

What enraged the Turks was the setting. Ayalon and two other Israeli officials occupied chairs while an uncomfortable Turkish ambassador was made to sit on a lower couch. On the coffee table between the two men was only the Israeli flag, not the Turkish flag, as would be customary.

Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, left, relegated Turkish Ambassador Ahmet Oguz Celikkol to a lower seat, fueling ongoing diplomatic tensions.

To make matters worse, Ayalon invited TV crews and photographers to the opening of the meeting and said in Hebrew, "Pay attention that he is sitting in a lower chair and we are in the higher ones, that there is only an Israeli flag on the table and that we are not smiling."

Now Turkish officials are not smiling either.

"We expect an explanation and apologies from Israeli authorities for the attitude against our Tel Aviv ambassador, [Ahmet] Oguz Celikkol, and the way this attitude was reflected," the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement.

Ayalon responded sharply in an interview with Israel's army radio.

"In terms of the diplomatic tactics available, this was the minimum that was warranted given the repeated provocations by political and other players in Turkey," he said.

The tensions come just days before Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is due to visit Turkey on Sunday. Israeli media speculated Ayalon's behavior toward the Turkish Ambassador was part of an ongoing rivalry between the Foreign and Defense ministries and that Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman was trying to sabotage Barak's trip.

There are also sharp differences of policy between Israel and Turkey over the Palestinian issue. Tensions grew after last year's Israeli incursion into Gaza that left 1,400 Palestinians dead, according to Palestinian figures. After the Gaza incursion, which Israel said was necessary to stop rocket fire from Gaza into southern Israel, NATO member Turkey barred Israel from participating in a NATO war exercise.

Under former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Turkey had also served as a mediator between Israel and Syria on restarting peace negotiations, an initiative Lieberman has shown scant interest in furthering.

Since the 1990s, Israel and Turkey have been close military allies, as well as two of Washington's best friends on the Mediterranean Sea. Israel has sold advance weapons systems to Turkey and the two countries share intelligence. Israel has seen Turkey, which is Muslim but not Arab, as a possible bridge to the wider Arab world.

Millions of Israelis have gone on vacation in Turkey. Hotel packages in Turkey, including the 90-minute flight, are cheaper than domestic hotels for many Israelis. In some hotels, especially around Antalya on Turkey's Mediterranean coast, employees speak only Turkish and Hebrew. Until the conflict blows over, exchanges there may be less cordial than usual.

Hi Michael,

It would be nice if that Jewish Nazi Deborah Lipstadt would at least spell MacDonald's name correctly. I guess this shows us the general quality of her scholarly work.

By the way, when did Kevin become a White Supremacist?

LAWSUIT: "You see, it's a crime to act white, or it's a crime to be white," the uncle testified.

    South Carolina Lawyers Weekly
    Issue Date: 12/28/2009

Williamsburg County schools settle with students over same-race discrimination
    by Fred Horlbeck

EXCERPT:

COLUMBIA, SC -- Two Williamsburg County students and members of their family have reached a $150,000 settlement in what may be the first Title VI lawsuit based on claims of intra-racial discrimination in South Carolina public schools.

        'Acting white'

Proving intra-racial discrimination was a matter of portraying the environment cultural and racial at the students' respective schools, Kobrovsky said.

Both students were African-American, and so was most of the elementary school's student body, according to Kobrovsky. Most students were also black at the high school that her uncle attended.

The problem was the culture of rural Williamsburg County, he said.

"You have a culture where to act like you want to do well in school is considered acting white. And that is part of why we're saying that it was racial, even though the students were all of the same race because they weren't acting how the others thought they should be acting as members of that race," Kobrovsky said.

The uncle testified that racial separation in the county generally meant white students attended private schools while black students attended public schools.

At the public schools, he said, fitting in meant not being what his family was: "churchy," "upright" and wanting education, as another witness put it, according to a trial transcript.

"You see, it's a crime to act white, or it's a crime to be white," the uncle testified.

Harassment, he testified, made him feel that "we are just dumb, we're just not people, we're undergraded, we're degraded, and we're not even supposed to be in this world."

That testimony was the key to the settlement, Kobrovsky said.

"I think the most compelling part was his, and that's, frankly, why it's settled after he testified," Kobrovsky said.

        Settlement Report

Brief statement of the claim: The plaintiffs claimed retaliation by public school district against parents and students for complaining about a racially hostile educational environment, in violation of Sect. 601 of Title VI of Chapter 21 of Title 42 of the Civil Rights Act, subchapter V, which prohibits the allowance of a racially hostile educational environment in schools and programs receiving federal financial assistance and provides for a private cause of action for such violations. The U.S. Department of Education, pursuant to 59 Fed. Reg. at 11449, defines a racially hostile educational environment as "one in which racial harassment is severe, pervasive or persistent so as to interfere with or limit the ability of an individual to participate in or benefit from the activities or privileges provided by the recipient"; 42 USC Sect. 1983 claims against superintendent and school principal; defamation, invasion of privacy, abuse of process.

Principal injuries: Physical illness, emotional distress and humiliation

Tried or settled: Settlement of $150,000 after second day of trial

County and court where tried or settled: U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina Florence Division

Case names and numbers: Gasque, et al. v. Williamsburg County School District et al., Civil Action No. 4:07-CV-01757-RBH; and Gasque v. Williamsburg County School District, et al., Civil Action No. 4:07-CV-1765-RBH.

        Date concluded: Oct. 27, 2009

Name of judge: U.S. District Judge Robert Bryan Harwell

        Amount: $150,000 for all claims

Insurance carrier: Williamsburg County School District, self-insured, and State Insurance Revenue Fund

        Expert witnesses: None

Attorney for plaintiffs: Lawrence C. Kobrovsky (Charleston) for constitutional law claims and Stephen F. DeAntonio, of DeAntonio Law Firm (Charleston), for defamation and invasion of privacy claims.

        Submitted by: Lawrence C. Kobrovsky

Taliban may be descended from Jews - Telegraph

Taliban may be descended from Jews

The ethnic group at the heart of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan may descended from their Jewish enemy, according to researchers in India.

By Dean Nelson in New Delhi
Published: 6:29PM GMT 11 Jan 2010

Experts at Mumbai's National Institute of Immunohaematology believe Pashtuns could be one of the ten "Lost Tribes of Israel".

The Israeli government is funding a genetic study to establish if there is any proof of the link.

An Indian geneticist has taken blood samples from the Pashtun Afridi tribe in Lucknow, Northern India, to Israel where she will spend the next 12 months comparing DNA with samples with those of Israeli Jews.

The samples were taken in Lucknow's Malihabad area because it was regarded as the only place safe enough to conduct such a controversial project for Muslims.

Shanaz Ali a senior research fellow, will lead the study at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology in Tel Aviv.

There are an estimated 40 million Pashtuns around the world including more than 14 million in Afghanistan and 28 million in Pakistan, mainly in the North West Frontier Province and Tribal areas but also with a strong presence in Karachi.

Many have grown up with stories of their people being "Children of Israel". According to legend, they are descended from the Ephraim tribe which was driven out of Israel by the Assyrian invasion in around 700BC.

Evidence of ancient Jewish settlement has been found in Heart, close to Afghanistan's border with Iran, where a graveyard contains tombs inscribed in Hebrew. The Afghan capital Kabul also has a centuries-old synagogue which has long been abandoned.

Navras Aafreedi, a leading researcher on the Lost Tribes of Israel, said the DNA investigation could have major modern repercussions.

"It could be seen as scientific validation of traditional belief about the Israelite origin of [Pashtuns] and can have interesting ramifications for Muslim-Jew relations in particular and the world at large," he said.

Last year, The Daily Telegraph revealed that Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad family may have been Jewish.

Czech cardinal warns: Muslims are conquering Europe

Muslims conquering Europe

Czech cardinal warns: Muslims are conquering Europe January 06, 2010

Cardinal Miloslav Vlk, who has served as Archbishop of Prague since 1991, has warned in an interview that "if Europe doesn't change its relation to its own roots, it will be Islamized."

"Europe has denied its Christian roots from which it has risen and which could give it the strength to fend off the danger that it will be conquered by Muslims-- which is actually happening gradually," he said. Muslims "easily fill the vacant space created as Europeans systematically empty the Christian content of their lives."

"At the end of the Middle Ages and in the early modern age, Islam failed to conquer Europe with arms. The Christians beat them then," he added. "Today, when the fighting is done with spiritual weapons which Europe lacks while Muslims are perfectly armed, the fall of Europe is looming."

Denouncing Europe's "pagan environment" and "atheistic style of life," Cardinal Vlk said that "Neither the free market nor freedom without responsibility is strong enough to form the basis of society. Not even democracy alone is a panacea unless it is embedded in God."

The Czech press is speculating that Pope Benedict will name a successor to the 77-year-old cardinal within days.

The conscious decision to pursue economic advancement at the expense of family life - and the corresponding abandonment of the principles summarized in HUMANAE VITAE - have eroded our ability to both physically and spiritually stave off the advance of darkness represented by Islam.
