Arizona Threatens to Turn Lights off in L.A.

Official Says Los Angeles Can Go Without Arizona Electricity if City Goes Through with Boycott

(CBS) You boycott our state, we'll shut off your lights.

That's essentially the message Arizona Corporation Commissioner Gary Pierce delivered to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa after the L.A. City Council voted to boycott Arizona in protest over its new and controversial immigration law.

In a letter to Villaraigosa, available on the conservative blog Hot Air, Pierce writes that he was "dismayed" by the city council's vote and threatened to respond by shutting off the city's Arizona-based electricity.

Israel sends Vanunu back to jail

A DECISION by the Israeli Supreme Court to send Mordechai Vanunu, the nuclear whistleblower, back to jail for three months has reignited calls for him to be freed from restrictions that have dogged his life for the past six years.

Amnesty International has pledged to make him a prisoner of conscience and his lawyers are considering taking action outside Israel.

Vanunu was released in 2004 after serving an 18-year sentence for treason and espionage after he revealed the secrets of the Dimona atomic weapons plant to The Sunday Times. The Israeli government immediately imposed severe restrictions that prohibited him from leaving the country, going near foreign embassies and even talking to foreigners.

In 2007 he was arrested and accused of giving interviews to foreign media, including the BBC and The Sunday Times. After a long court battle he was found guilty. His lawyers managed to have his sentence reduced to community service. But there was no community service scheme in Arab east Jerusalem, the only part of Israel where he feels safe.

Avigdor Feldman, his lawyer, said the decision on May 11 to impose the original sentence and make him report to prison next Sunday was grotesque.

"After being found guilty in 1988 he was kept in solitary confinement for more than 11 years and I am very worried at the effect this could have on his mental state," Feldman said. "All he has been accused of is talking to strangers, not revealing any new secrets. It is surely time he was allowed to lead a normal life."

Dan Eldad, of the state prosecution service, said there was no other choice. "The court was convinced that Vanunu is in possession of information that, if revealed, would jeopardise the state's security even today," he said.

This contradicts a recent statement from Brigadier-General Uzi Eilam, who ran the Israel Atomic Energy Commission between 1976 and 1986. He said anything Vanunu might yet disclose about Dimona had little relevance: "I've always believed he should be let go."

Vanunu's brother Meir said the threat of going to jail had put Mordechai in low spirits. He was walking around the hills of east Jerusalem, getting a last taste of the outdoors.

JERUSALEM (JTA) -- A Polish-language guide to the holiday of Shavuot will be distributed to thousands of hidden Jews in Poland.

The guide, prepared by the Shavei Israel organization, explains the meaning and significance of the holiday, and presents holiday songs and recipes.

"In recent years, an increasing number of Poles have rediscovered their Jewish ancestry, seeking to reclaim the precious heritage that was so brutally taken from them and their forebears," said Michael Freund, Shavei Israel's chairman and founder. "It is our hope that this book will, in some small way, enable a new generation of Polish Jews to celebrate Shavuot with joy, as well as gain a better understanding of our eternal faith."

About 4,000 Jews are officially registered as living in Poland, but according to various estimates there are tens of thousands of others who have concealed their true identity or simply are unaware of it, according to Shavei Israel.

Many of the hidden Jews lost contact with Judaism due to the extreme anti-Semitism that they encountered after the Holocaust, while some converted. Others concealed their Jewishness from the Communist authorities and now feel free to resume living as Jews.

In addition, Jews hidden by Catholic families and institutions or their descendants have begun to rediscover their Jewish identities, the organization says.

Two of Shavei Israel's emissaries to Poland, Rabbis Yitzchak Rapoport and Boaz Pash, prepared the guide.

Breaking News: President Obama To Create A Presidential Commission to Investigate the Gulf Oil Spill

A "Presidential Commission for Gulf Oil Spill" will be set up via Executive Order by President Obama.

I think it was Geral Ford who once said, "If you want to make sure no one gets prosecuted, just set up a Presidential Commission to handle the matter."

Set up a Presidential Commission? Any 12-yr. old with a modem knows that the Gulf Oil Spill was no accident; it was criminal negligence at worst and shameless corporate irresponsibility at best. All the marine & wildlife experts are saying online and on air that this oil disaster will ruin the Gulf for at least forty or fifty years.

What Our President should be doing is sending in the U.S. NAVY and a cadre of Navy Seals to shut that pipe down, period. BP is still trying to "capture and save" their profit product: OIL & GAS. BP should not be allowed to continue to occupy the crime scene. BP should not be allowed to make a profit off this well, which will happen if our guvmint allows it.

INSTEAD......Obama is allowing BP to continue to molest the crime scene and continue to save money, save product and turn an official Disaster For America into an official PROFIT FOR BP!
