WHY WOULD JESUS SAY ABOUT 'CHRISTIAN ZIONISM'?

What sort of Christians become Zionists?

Stuart Littlewood

"We categorically reject Christian Zionist doctrines as a false teaching that corrupts the biblical message of love, justice and reconciliation" – The Jerusalem Declaration

Not all Jews are Zionists. Many reject the Zionist project and fight against it.

So why on earth would a non-Jew wish to be one? Indeed, how could a genuine Christian seriously consider becoming a Zionist? It has puzzled me for a long time. The two ideas are incompatible, are they not?

So consider for a moment Anglican Friends of Israel, as an example. Their stated aims include:

  • To support the people of Israel and to secure defensible borders for the State of Israel.
  • To recall the Church to G-d's Covenant with the Jewish people and to call the Church to affirm the centrality of Israel to the Jewish faith.
  • To call Anglicans to repentance for the wrongs – of both word and deed – inflicted by Christians on the Jewish people and the nation of Israel.
  • To fight all libels against Israel and the Jewish people and their State.
  • To protect the Christian communities threatened by Islamic extremism in the Middle East.

Are they Zionists? It sounds very much like it. For them Israel can do no wrong and Christians need to apologise to the Jewish people… er, what for?

And what makes them think that Muslims are more of a threat than Israeli extremists to Christian communities?

You should also see the sort of stuff the Anglican Friends of Israel post on their website.

AFI Press Release: The Mavi Marmara

Written by Anglican Friends of Israel

Wednesday, 02 June 2010

Anglican Friends of Israel are dismayed at international condemnation of Israel following attacks upon Israeli Defence Force personnel [by] a supposedly peaceful aid convoy… Israeli offers of peaceful means to deliver the aid into Gaza were refused. Video footage proves that the violence which tragically resulted in the deaths of some passengers and injuries to others including IDF personnel was begun by Aid convoy members… Terrorists in Gaza continue to fire rockets into Israel – over 60 this year so far – and to explode bombs in order to kill and maim Israeli citizens.

Western spokespersons might bear in mind that the terror threat to western nations springs from the same source as that faced daily by Israelis and be more circumspect in making demands on Israel before all relevant facts have emerged.

Anyone would be forgiven for thinking it was actually penned by the crapaganda unit in Tel Aviv. These Anglicans (if they are Anglicans) swallowed Israel's poisonous concoction hook, line and sinker and re-broadcast it while the abducted flotilla aid workers – witnesses to the murderous assault and executions – were incarcerated in Israeli jails and unable to tell the outside world what really happened.

I don't know of any danger to us from Hamas, Hezbollah or Iran, if those are the "terror" sources referred to. I doubt if groups who wish to see the Israeli nuclear threat to their region neutralised are also gunning for us, even though people like Anglican Friends of Israel and foreign secretary William Hague are doing their best to provoke them. But Israel of course wishes to make the British feel threatened and to draw us for strategic reasons into their schemes for permanent occupation and domination. There are always plenty of useful idiots to do their bidding.

A few days earlier the Anglicans issued a press release stating that the flotilla to Gaza was "a publicity stunt, not a genuine aid convoy". The item was actually a statement by the Israeli embassy repeated word for word and containing meaningless information like… "Since last year's January cease fire, 133 million liters of fuel entered Gaza from Israel – That's more than enough fuel to fill the fuel tank of every car and truck in Israel!" and "Since the ceasefire, well over a million tons of humanitarian supplies entered Gaza from Israel – That's almost a ton of aid for every man woman and child in Gaza."

Meaningless, because the figures lacked context. You have to go to the UN for that. Whatever Israel lets in, says the UN, it's only one-fifth of what's needed.

Some apparently responsible people, it seems, would rather accept without question the disinformation fed them by the Israeli authorities than on-the-spot assessments and reports by the UN and various charities.

Actually Israel is letting in only a quarter of what it let in before Hamas was elected.

Without question there was a publicity angle to the voyage. The organisers had a political point to make – the whole ugly US/UK-created mess out there is a political cesspit. The Israelis couldn't afford to see their illegal blockade breached. The evidence points to a planned execution raid on the Mavi Marmara in the dead of night with a pre-prepared hit-list.

And in a letter to the BBC these Anglicans insisted that Operation Cast Lead (Israel's blitzkrieg on Gaza after breaking the ceasefire with Hamas, subsequently killing 1400, maiming heaven knows how many and making hundreds of thousands homeless) was an act of "self-defense".

If you are as bewildered as I am why so-called Christians are persuaded to sign up to Zionism, a short paper explaining the phenomenon is available from Sadaka, The Ireland Palestine Alliance – see www.sadaka.ie. I found it very helpful.

"The destiny of the Jewish people is to return to the land of Israel and reclaim their inheritance promised to Abraham and his descendants forever. This inheritance extends from the River of Egypt to the Euphrates. Within their land, Jerusalem is recognised to be their exclusive, undivided and eternal capital, and therefore it cannot be shared or divided.

At the heart of Jerusalem will be the rebuilt Jewish temple, to which all the nations will come to worship God. Just prior to the return of Jesus, there will be seven years of calamities and war known as the tribulation, which will culminate in a great battle called Armageddon, during which the godless forces opposed to both God and Israel will be defeated.

Jesus will then return as the Jewish Messiah and king to reign in Jerusalem for a thousand years, and the Jewish people will enjoy a privileged status and role in the world."

That's the Zionist dream in a nutshell.

As I understand it, the Jews were expelled by the Roman occupation in 70AD, when the second temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, and again in 135AD.

These days the right of return is regarded as an inalienable right. But it should be exercised as soon as the reason for expulsion (e.g. foreign occupation) ceases. In the Jews' case an opportunity would have occurred in the 4th century AD as the Roman Empire collapsed. But they didn't take it. They can hardly expect to change their mind 16 centuries later. Their right expired a very long time ago.

By comparison the Palestinians' right of return after being ethnically cleansed in 1948 and ever since is much stronger because the enemy occupation has not yet ended and the UN has endorsed their right.

Nevertheless Zionists claim Jerusalem is theirs by heavenly decree. However, this holiest of cities was already 2000 years old when King David captured it. It dates back 5000 years and was named after the Canaanite God of Dusk.

Historians say that Jerusalem, in its 'City of David' form, lasted a mere 73 years. In 928BC the kingdom divided into Israel and Judah, and in 597BC the Babylonians conquered the city and destroyed Solomon's temple. The Jews recaptured it in 164BC but finally lost it to the Roman Empire in 63BC. Before the present-day conflict the Jews, in total, controlled Jerusalem for some 500 years, whereas it was subsequently ruled by Muslims for 1,277 years. Before the Jews it belonged to the Canaanites. And for nearly 90 years it was also a Christian kingdom. A lot of competing claims, then, which is probably why the UN declared it should be independently administered as an international city.

In 1187 Saladin restored the city to Islam while allowing Jews and Christians to remain. Today Jewish religious groups want control of the city for their spiritual centre and for a third temple to be built in accordance with ancient prophecies. The plan to make the Israeli occupation permanent threatens especially the Muslim but also the Christian holy places and serves to keep political tension boiling. It is no surprise, given Israel's reliance on 'black' propaganda, that when the Iranian president quoted the late Ayatollah Khomeini as saying the unfriendly regime occupying Jerusalem "must vanish from the page of time", he was immediately reported as wanting to wipe Israel off the map.

Sadaka puts the genuine Christian position by quoting The Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism, a statement by the Latin Patriarch and Local Heads of Churches in Jerusalem issued in 2006…

We categorically reject Christian Zionist doctrines as a false teaching that corrupts the biblical message of love, justice and reconciliation.

We further reject the contemporary alliance of Christian Zionist leaders and organizations with elements in the governments of Israel and the United States that are presently imposing their unilateral pre-emptive borders and domination over Palestine. This inevitably leads to unending cycles of violence that undermine the security of allpeoples of the Middle East and the rest of world.

We reject the teachings of Christian Zionism that facilitate and support these policies as they advance racial exclusivity and perpetual war rather than the gospel of universal love, redemption and reconciliation taught by Jesus Christ. Rather than condemn the world to the doom of Armageddon we call upon everyone to liberate themselves from ideologies of militarism and occupation. Instead, let them pursue the healing of the nations!

The Declaration, explains Sadaka, asserts that "Christian Zionists have aggressively imposed an aberrant expression of the Christian faith and an erroneous interpretation of the Bible, which is subservient to the political agenda of the modern State of Israel… Christian Zionism thrives on a literal and futurist hermeneutic in which Old Testament promises made to the ancient Jewish people are transferred to the contemporary State of Israel in anticipation of a final future fulfillment."

I haven't yet seen credible response from the Christian Zionists.

Alarmingly, the US-based Unity Coalition for Israel brings together over 200 organisations and is the largest pro-Israel network in the world. They claim to have 40 million active members and lobby on behalf of Israel through 1,700 religious radio stations, 245 Christian TV stations and 120 Christian newspapers.

The question I'd like answered is this. Are we to believe that an all-powerful supernatural Being has chosen and elevated one group of humans to a position of supremacy above all others, and has approved the use any means including murder and brutal eviction to achieve their goal, and now mobilizes millions of lesser mortals from around the globe, like those who regard themselves as upstanding Christians, to serve as tools and sing the praises of this 'Grand Design'?

In the meantime I'm with the Churches of Jerusalem on this one.

It took an 89-year old woman, the formidable White House correspondent Helen Thomas, to prick the Zionists' over-inflated balloon when she said last week that the Israelis should "get the hell out of Palestine" and "go home… to Germany, Poland, America and everywhere else."

The hatchet squad roaming America's den of iniquity promptly fell on her. They may have silenced her, and may even have destroyed this frail lady, but the power of her words will live on…

The Shock Doctrine

The Shock Doctrine

In THE SHOCK DOCTRINE, Naomi Klein explodes the myth that the global free market triumphed democratically. Exposing the thinking, the money trail and the puppet strings behind the world-changing crises and wars of the last four decades, The Shock Doctrine is the gripping story of how America's "free market" policies have come to dominate the world-- through the exploitation of disaster-shocked people and countries.

At the most chaotic juncture in Iraq's civil war, a new law is unveiled that would allow Shell and BP to claim the country's vast oil reserves…. Immediately following September 11, the Bush Administration quietly out-sources the running of the "War on Terror" to Halliburton and Blackwater…. After a tsunami wipes out the coasts of Southeast Asia, the pristine beaches are auctioned off to tourist resorts.... New Orleans's residents, scattered from Hurricane Katrina, discover that their public housing, hospitals and schools will never be reopened…. These events are examples of "the shock doctrine": using the public's disorientation following massive collective shocks – wars, terrorist attacks, or natural disasters -- to achieve control by imposing economic shock therapy. Sometimes, when the first two shocks don't succeed in wiping out resistance, a third shock is employed: the electrode in the prison cell or the Taser gun on the streets.

Based on breakthrough historical research and four years of on-the-ground reporting in disaster zones, The Shock Doctrine vividly shows how disaster capitalism – the rapid-fire corporate reengineering of societies still reeling from shock – did not begin with September 11, 2001. The book traces its origins back fifty years, to the University of Chicago under Milton Friedman, which produced many of the leading neo-conservative and neo-liberal thinkers whose influence is still profound in Washington today. New, surprising connections are drawn between economic policy, "shock and awe" warfare and covert CIA-funded experiments in electroshock and sensory deprivation in the 1950s, research that helped write the torture manuals used today in Guantanamo Bay.

The Shock Doctrine follows the application of these ideas through our contemporary history, showing in riveting detail how well-known events of the recent past have been deliberate, active theatres for the shock doctrine, among them: Pinochet's coup in Chile in 1973, the Falklands War in 1982, the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989, the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, the Asian Financial crisis in 1997 and Hurricane Mitch in 1998.

Michael- Forward my anonymous response to the list and watch the fireworks fly! -N.

Anthony

I've been highly involved in the fight to expose "Holocaust" lies for over 21 years –and I'm 34 years old. I am skeptical of the Holocaust for many of the same reasons I'm skeptical of the increasingly /religious/ dogma that the United States government orchestrated the 9-11 attacks. Both stories amount to 'belief systems' by virtue of their status as so internally contradictory that a sort of blind faith is required to avoid apostasy. The promoters of both conspiracy theories descend into a vicious, rabid mania, almost screeching for blood the moment any heretic doubts the least of their claims. Both conspiracy theories rely heavily on the logical fallacy know as Argument From Authority: lists of names of experts who agree with at least one aspect of the theory (though promoters of both faiths hysterically rub these lists in the faces of any heretic who dares to take exception with /any single aspect/ of either faith, regardless of whether the authorities they use as a crutch believe that particular sub-theory or not). Devotees of both faiths include vast numbers of utterly unqualified laypersons to whom even the most inconclusive, problematic explanations of the physics of their respective theories constitute the FINAL word, such that any reviewer interested in so much as refining the theory through critique should be immediately burned at the stake.

I have rarely been impressed with the endless string of videos my friends have expected would convert me to their religion once and for all. What is plainly clear, however, is that the events did not unfold as the government or the media barons state. Some major questions need answering, but a better understanding of the nature of the relationship between the government and the ruling class (the highly disparate but also relatively unified transnational Jewish nation, most crucially their media barons) happens to be infinitely more congruent with the likely scenario as evidenced by all data, including the silly videos and reports produced by either the federal government or the "Truth" movement and its many clueless Hollywood devotees. I wish I could say that both sides' accounts were equally silly in my eyes.

In any event, my words are unlikely to influence anybody so much as they will enrage the faithful. Because I wish devotees of the "Truth" faith well, and would like nothing more than to see them push the public closer to some reality here or there, I would advise them to consider a few concepts as they proceed to alienate friends, family, and those sympathetic to our real emergency:

(1) The reasons even the world's top scientists still engage in operations called "experiments" is that even these earthly gods of academia-accredited omniscience can never be certain of the outcome of any sequence of movements in a (far more complex than "truthers" or "Holocaust survivors," ie, all Jews, understand) multi-variable physical system. For example: every steel building is different, and the argument that a B-25D crashing into the Empire State building without causing it to collapse means that the twin towers could not have collapsed without the advance placement of explosive charges makes one look as silly to an educated student of skepticism as it makes one look impressive to any halfwit who merely "wants to believe."

(2) One should do as the government does when it carries out naughty business a'la selling crack to blacks in Los Angeles: KEEP IT SIMPLE. By the principle of Occam's Razor, gravitate toward the explanation that requires the least assumptions, refute it and move up an assumption notch until a workable, plausible theory is reached that is not internally contradictory and (crucially) vulnerable to flaws by virtue of far-fetched or impossible necessary conditions of the assumption. For example: If, hypothetically, every single aspect of the "Truth" faith were true MINUS the advance placement of explosive charges in the twin towers, wouldn't that be sufficient to serve the evil regime's interests? The US would have embarked on CLEAN BREAK whether or not the towers collapsed. Why would it instead risk the disaster to unfold if a single remorseful demolition operative walked into a Belarussian media outlet tomorrow with incontrovertible proof and the story of the century? You only understand my point here if you see that evoking some other, utterly convincing evidence of controlled implosion would be completely irrelevant to my point.

(3) One should not repeat with certainty what he has heard from others without knowing for sure what HE is talking about. Doing so in the context of an aside, if easily disproved, can discredit one's entire faith/theory. In the context of the "Truth" movement, I would recommend that devotees and true activists (what few there are) concentrate on Building Seven and totally dispense with the idea that no 727 hit the pentagon. The entire body of conspiracy theories surrounding that sub-topic is so idiotic that the mere utterance of any element of it is, to possessors of brains, analogous to a homeless bag-lady's matter-of-fact reference to the pet purple unicorn she wonders if you can keep an eye on for a moment while she steps into the park porta-potty.

Just trying to help,

Hello,

I'm quite intrigued about the "Helen Thomas Affair."  I once caught her bolstering the 19-Arabs-with-Box-Cutters 9/11 scenario, admittedly in a passing way, but such ways are often how a story is made to establish itself as fact, so I wondered:  Could a person dedicated to being a news correspondent, never mind the White House adjective, in the United States fail to notice that the planes have never been forensically identified, or that well over a thousand architects and engineers dispute the official story about how the Towers and WTC 7 came down, and all the rest of it?

Either answer must mean that such a person was either:

a)     Useless as an observer of what was going on around her, or

b)    Was content not to mention these glaringly obvious discrepancies in the official story.

After all, many good men, women and children have died because no one who mattered stood up and cried:  "This is wrong!", either just after 9/11 or during the massive weapons-of-mass-destruction swindle that was carried out in plain sight, from within the Oval Office and Downing Street, and which was then brought into the United Nation's Security Council as absolute fact.

Shouldn't Helen Thomas to be castigated for her silence on those issues, as well as many others, while praising her for her question to Obama about Israel's nuclear weapons and her forthrightness about the Palestine issue?

Are Palestinians Doing it all Wrong?
Ten years ago Smith argued that Palestinians might consider non-violent protest against Israeli injustice and brutality. Here he suggests that the Gaza Flotilla demonstrates the benefits of that approach.

The answer is no...and it is a silly question. No personal offense to Anthony but this really needs an airing.

You can't find anyone, even the most distinguished historians and journalists in history, where they 'have not spoken out against something'. So what is the point in tearing them down this way? Does it hurt or help our common enemies?

Where this comes from is a natural frustration of particular issue people wanting other folks to aggressively promote their main issue. But this always comes at the expense of someone else's issue not being promoted.

For example the grass roots TeaParty folks have done a great job in putting a dent in out political incumbency problem, and the Christian orgs have stood up against the ethnic cleansing of America's religious heritage. But have they lifted a finger on the massive Israeli espionage that has gone on here for decades? No.

I read a TeaParty leader who openly said they were going to stay away from 'social issues' (as divisive) to concentrate on financial ones.

Where this was coming from was Republican committee infiltration of the TeaParty (providing most of their funding and logistics now) to steer them away from 'complicating' issues.

When we have a 100 key issues that need to be dealt with, our minders like to hone this down to about three or four polling questions. If your issue is not on this list then you have to 'buy' influence. Welcome to our modern democracy.

APARTHEID GETS ITS DAY IN COURT IN FRANCE

APARTHEID GETS ITS DAY IN COURT IN FRANCE

Ahava campaign comes to court
Adri Nieuwhof*

Activists protest outside of a US store selling Ahava products. (Stolen Beauty)

In France, the campaign to boycott Ahava Dead Sea cosmetics has entered a new phase with boycott, divestment and sanctions advocates taking legal action against the Sephora cosmetics retail chain's contract with the company.

Ahava manufactures its cosmetics in a factory in the illegal Mitzpe Shalem settlement in the occupied West Bank. However, Ahava labels its skin care products as originating from "The Dead Sea, Israel." The Israeli settlements of Mitzpe Shalem and Kaliya co-founded Ahava's factory Dead Sea Laboratories and own 44 percent of the shares of the company. Both Mitzpe Shalem and Kaliya are close to the shores of the Dead Sea, exploiting it for tourism. The mud used in Ahava products is taken from a site near Kaliya, along the occupied shores of the Dead Sea. Ahava uses Palestinian natural resources without permission and compensation. In addition, Ahava runs an information center for tourists in the Mitzpe Shalem settlement.

In its authoritative ruling in 2004, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) reaffirmed the illegality of settlement construction, which includes the construction of industrial sites in the settlements. Ahava's factory and tourist center are therefore built in violation of international law.

Ahava's firm connection with Israeli settlements is at the heart of the legal action undertaken by the French-based Coordination des Appels pour une Paix Juste au Proche Orient (CAPJPO) against Sephora at the end of May. Sephora, a division of the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy Group (LVMH), sells Ahava cosmetics in its stores. For almost a year activists have protested the store's retailing of Ahava products, calling on the public to support the protest by sending messages to the French company appealing to them to take the products off their shelves (Boycott of Ahava Dead Sea products makes an impact"). Sephora has refused to do so and is now been taken to court by CAPJPO, which claims that the company's contract with Ahava is illegal because the cosmetics are produced in illegal settlements. In its complaint that was filed to the court of Nanterre at the end of May, CAPJPO argues that in retailing Ahava products, Sephora is supporting the violation of international law.

Palestine solidarity activists in the US have also embarked upon boycott campaigns targeting Ahava.

In the US, Ahava is sold by Ricky's NYC, a family-owned chain store in New York City, Lord & Taylor in Washington, and Nordstrom department stores amongst other retailers. The department stores have drawn the attention of activists from the American peace group CodePink. CodePink's Stolen Beauty Campaign targets Ahava Dead Sea cosmetics with colorful protests that include the messages "Ahava is dirty business" and "Ahava puts a pretty face on its crimes."

The CodePink campaign and the work of other solidarity groups has had an impact. Bad publicity caused Sex & the City star Kristin Davis to be dropped as a spokesperson for Ahava and as a goodwill ambassador for the international organization Oxfam after activists called on her to end her paid promotional appearances for Ahava.

Activists with CodePink, dubbed the Pink Police, have also undertaken direct action to "block the crime scenes" in the stores where the Ahava products are sold (BDS Austin Activism -- Ahava Protest"). Activists have sent letters to Nordstrom, explaining that selling Ahava products contradicts the company's membership in Business for Social Responsibility, a global nonprofit organization. Ahava has attempted to deflect criticism and defend its theft of Palestinian resources by claiming that "The Dead Sea and its treasures are international and do not belong to one nation."

Meanwhile, CodePink has called on the publisher of the The Lonely Planet travel guides to drop a recommendation in future editions of the Israel and the Palestinian Territories Guidebook for shopping at the Ahava Factory Outlet and Store, based in the Mitzpe Shalem settlement. CodePink informed The Lonely Planet editors of an international boycott campaign against Ahava Dead Sea Laboratories because of the company's illegal practices. The Lonely Planet publicist has replied that the comment would be forwarded to the editor and authors.

Despite its tarnished image, Ahava plans to open a flagship store in New York City, in addition to its international stores in Berlin, London and Singapore. Last year, it began collaborating with Teva Nederland to promote its products to Dutch pharmacies. Teva Nederland -- a market leader in generic medicines, serving the majority of Dutch pharmacies -- is a subsidiary of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Ltd., an Israeli company with branches in North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Teva Nederland introduced Ahava in fifty pharmacies in 2009 and planned to expand this number to 300 in 2010. In addition, the Israel Export & Cooperation Institute reported in April on a possible joint venture between Teva Pharmaceutical Industries and Ahava cosmetics to develop a dermo-cosmetics line together.

However, the boycott campaign will make it difficult for Ahava to expand its markets. At the end of 2009, in response to a call from the Dutch Bathrobes Brigades, a group campaigning for a boycott of Ahava cosmetics, several Dutch pharmacists expressed their support of the campaign and stated their refusal to put Ahava products on their shelves. Solidarity activists will continue to make an impact on Ahava's profit margins as the international boycott movement gains steam in the wake of Israel's attack on the Gaza Freedom Flotilla in international waters.
