A Review of "Capitalism and the Jews" by Jerry Z. Muller, Part 4

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 09:41 PM PDT

The case of Hungary

Muller cites a prominent case study – that of Hungary – that would seem to disprove the thesis that Jews embraced communism most enthusiastically where their economic circumstances were poorest. Nowhere was the economic and social ascent of Jews as rapid as in Hungary in the half-century before World War I. As Muller notes: 'The prominence of Jews in [Bela Kun's short-lived] Hungarian Soviet Republic [of 1919] is all the more striking when one considers that the Jews of Hungary were richer than their coreligionists in eastern Europe and remarkably successfully in attaining positions of status.'  Furthermore, 'Though only 5 percent of the population, on the eve of World War I Jews made up almost half the doctors, lawyers, and journalists in Hungary' (p. 154).

Bela Kun, leader of Communist Hungary, 1919

Muller vividly describes the vast extent of Jewish involvement of in Communist regimes in Hungary both prior to and after World War Two, starting with the Hungarian Soviet Republic of Bela Kun (Cohen) who seized power in March 1919 and lasted for only 133 days before succumbing to invading Romanian troops. Muller notes that of the government's forty-nine commissars, thirty-one were of Jewish origin. Despite their relative economic success, the 'secularized Jewish intelligentsia of Hungary was naturally attracted to the ideology of radical internationalist socialism, which promised a political community based on universalism rather than on religious or national particularism' (p. 155). To rephrase this in terms of the group evolutionary strategy idea, they were especially attracted to an ideology that would transform the economic and political basis of society, destroy traditional religious institutions seen as anti-Jewish, and would also be consistent with their own power and with the continuity of Jewish group cohesion.

When they seized power in 1919 these Jewish revolutionaries acted in enthusiastic accord with their radical political principles:

Statues of Hungarian kings and national heroes were torn down, the national anthem was banned, and the display of the national colors was made a punishable offense. … Radical agitators were dispatched to the countryside, where they ridiculed the institution of the family and threatened to turn churches into movie theatres. … Antipathy soon enough focused on the Jews. Young revolutionaries of Jewish origin had been sent to the countryside to administer the newly collectivized agricultural estates; their radicalism was exceeded only by their incompetence, reinforcing peasant anti-Semitism. The Jesuits, for their part, interpreted the revolution as Jewish and anti-Christian in essence. … Rumors abounded that the revolutionaries were everywhere desecrating the Host. In Budapest as in the countryside, opposition to the regime, defense of the church, and anti-Semitism went hand in hand. (Muller, pp. 156-157)

An eyewitness account of the Hungarian Soviet Republic was published in 1921 by the visiting French brothers Jean and Jérôme Tharaud entitled Quand Israël est roi (When Israel is King). Muller points out that: 'Interspersed with accounts of the confiscation of wealth by the revolutionaries and the replacement of Christian professors by young Jewish intellectuals were reflections such as this: "A New Jerusalem was growing up on the banks of the Danube. It emanated from Karl Marx's Jewish brain, and was built by Jews upon a foundation of very ancient ideas"' (p. 160).  In 1933 the Tharaud brothers would entitle their new book on Hitler's new regime Quand Israël n'est plus roi (When Israel is No Longer King).

After World War II, Hungary again offered an extreme example of the overrepresentation of Jews in the new Communist government brought to power by the Red Army. In Muller's view, 'the utilization of Jews in prominent positions was, to use an apposite phrase, "no accident." In the newly conquered nations of eastern and central Europe, the Soviets had few reliable supporters. Suspicion of Russian imperialism was old and well-founded, and anti-Communism almost a national religion' (p. 170). Jews were among the very few natives the Soviets could trust to carry out their plans. Muller notes that 'because they were familiar with local conditions and fanatically antifascist, Jews were often chosen for the security police [see here, p. 60ff for a similar account in post-WWII Poland]. Because of their high level of education, they were particularly active in the fields of propaganda and education' (p. 171).

Note that Muller casually conflates fascism with nationalism. Throughout post-WWII Eastern Europe patriotic nationalist forces were brutally suppressed by the communist government, as in Poland (see above link). The Jews who aided the communist regimes were therefore engaged not in anti-fascism but in actions opposed to the traditional peoples and culture of these societies, while typically maintaining their own ethnic commitments. A classic example was Markus Wolf who was 'active at first in the propaganda apparatus of the [East German] regime,' and who later headed the East German military espionage service (the Stasi) until 1987.

Muller also speculates that Stalin's motive for installing so many Jewish leaders to enforce Soviet rule in conquered eastern Europe was that communists of Jewish origin seemed the least likely to form an alliance with the local populace against the hegemony of the Soviets, as Tito had done in Yugoslavia—an acknowledgement that Jews were indeed were more willing to engage in actions opposed to the traditional peoples and culture of these societies. Muller observes that 'nowhere were Jews more prominent in the Sovietization of the nation' than in Hungary, where 'the key post of general secretary was once again occupied by a Jew, Mátyás Rákosi' who billed himself as 'Stalin's best pupil' (p. 173).  The next five major positions were filled by Jews like Ernö Gerö (Singer) who became minister of state; Mihály Farkas (Wolf) who became minister of defense; József Révai who became the party's chief ideologist and minister of culture; Gábor Péter (born Benö Auspitz) became head of the Hungarian political police; while control of the Hungarian economy went to another Jew, Zoltán Vas (Weinberger).

Mátyás Rákosi, leader post-WWII Communist Hungary

Muller estimates that 30 percent or more of higher police officials were Jewish, and 'many departments of the security apparatus were headed by Jews.' Many of these Jews had spent years, even decades, in the Soviet Union, while others 'had returned from concentration camps or … [had] survived the war in Budapest.' These Jews regarded the Soviets as their liberators and nursed 'a burning desire for vengeance against the Hungarians' who had collaborated with the Nazis. 'By moving into the army, the police, and the security apparatus,' he notes, 'these young Jewish survivors put themselves in a position to settle accounts with the men of the Arrow Cross' (p. 175).

It was hardly surprising in such an environment that anti-Semitic riots broke out in 1946. The oppressive nature of the new regime can be gauged by the fact that between 1952 and 1955 'the police opened files on over a million Hungarians, 45 percent of whom were penalized,' and Muller concedes that 'Jews were very salient in the apparatus of repression' (pp. 178–179).

It has not gone unnoticed that, despite the evidence for very large Jewish involvement in communist crimes, 'there are no apologies from Jewish organizations and very few mea culpas from Jewish intellectuals' (see here, p. 40). At the end of his chapter on the Jews and radical anti-Capitalism, Muller offers a partial, cautiously framed semi-apology by claiming that 'Communists of Jewish origin, no less than their non-Jewish counterparts, were led by their anti-capitalist ideals to participate in disastrous policies and to take part in heinous crimes against Jews and non-Jews alike.' He particularly laments that 'the conspicuous role played by Jews in the Communist movement, though rarely the primary cause of anti-Jewish sentiment, fanned the flames of anti-Semitism' (p. 188).

We are thus led to conclude that while Jews may have been prominent as perpetrators of  the crimes of communist regimes, they were, together with non-Jews, the equally prominent victims of these crimes. There is a fundamental dishonesty in this position, in that Jews were most certainly not the victims of communist oppression to anywhere near the extent that the non-Jewish groups were and, proportionately, were represented among the agents of this oppression to a vastly greater degree than any non-Jewish group. The reality is that, rather than its victims, Jews were instrumental in the rise to power of many brutal communist regimes, and were deeply involved in the murderous reign of terror unleashed by these regimes; and as financiers, apologists and spies for the Soviet Union in the West. This simple truth is something that Muller, ultimately, is not willing to concede.

Jewish capitalism and anti-capitalism in the United States

The other prominent example that refutes the thesis that Jews became more radicalized where their economic and social disadvantage was greatest is the United States. While the communists never came to power in the United States, Muller notes that:

The image of the Jew as Communist played an often overlooked role in the history not only of Jews in America, but of the millions of Jews in eastern Europe who would have liked to emigrate to the United States after World War I, but who were prevented from doing so by the immigration restrictions enacted in the early 1920s, culminating in the Reed-Johnson Act of 1924. For those restrictions were motivated in part by the identification of Jews with political radicalism.' (pp. 161–162)

Kevin MacDonald points out that in the United States the Jewish embrace of radical political ideology 'became disassociated from the usual demographic variables not long after arrival.' This was because 'American Jews had far less reason than other ethnic groups to wish for an overthrow of capitalism because they tended to be relatively economically privileged.' A prime example of this was the fact that the New Left radical students of the 1960s came disproportionately from highly educated and affluent families. The only viable explanation for this phenomenon lies in social identity theory which would predict that Jews would embrace an ideology that entailed a negative evaluation of the non-Jewish outgroup cultural norms and power structure. As MacDonald notes, 'Social identity processes and their influence on perception of ethnic (group) interests rather than economic self-interest appears to be paramount here' (see here, p. 83).

The falls of Nazism and Communism have, Muller observes, not dispelled the centuries-old nexus between the image of the Jew and the evaluation of capitalism. He detects their twenty-first century echoes 'in the rhetoric of accusation against the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.' Moreover, he notes that 'since the end of Communism, the condemnation of capitalism, Jewry, and the United States have frequently been blended together, with the shadow of usury and the specter of the Jews now cast over the United States' (p. 71). This is hardly surprising given that it is estimated that around fifty percent of Wall Street executives are Jewish, the prominent role of Jews in financial de-regulation that underlies the current crisis, the Jewish domination of the Federal Reserve System and the economic departments of the US Government.

The global financial crisis, its causation, and the subsequent recession that has gripped many parts of the West have, once again, highlighted the relationship between capitalism and the Jews. The Jewish financial elite (whose speculative activities were allowed to expand for two decades at the expense of the productive sectors of the economy) behaved more like an organized criminal gang than an elite with a sense of civic responsibility and commitment to the long term viability of the societies in which they dwell. This is not surprising given the history of diasporic Jews thinking of themselves as outsiders, alienated from the societies around them—a hostile elite with a potent sense of historical grievance. For American Jewry, forever fixated on the aggressive pursuit of their individual and group interests, the viability of their host society has always been a lesser concern.

Fw: The contagious failing economy

THE CONTAGIOUS FAILING ECONOMY

When we venture into the field of finances, our teachers are  generally left at sea, for by their own admission, most of them are notoriously poor economists, and ye the economic facets of the breakdown of constitutional government are too important to ignore.  In this instant we rely on the moderate businessman and the few teachers of economics who do not peddle fiscal nonsense.  They tell us that a  government which is unsound economically is one which is in danger of general collapse, and to this observation the historian can add the comment that modern dictatorships often arise in periods of economic as well as political breakdown.

Fiscal solvency is one of the strongest props of constitutional  government as well as a monarchy; whereas unemployment, inflation, and rising debt are always among its deadliest foes. The latter three factors have been present with increasing force ever since the end of World War II,  and about to reach a point where their disruptive influences will result in chaos.  Unemployment presents opportunities to those seeking to institute totalitarian rule, for fathers who
cannot feed and support their families are desperate men without hope. They are the ones who will follow any ranting demagogue who promises bread and jobs. The unemployed are a reservoir of potential revolutionary danger in that
they may b e used by an elite seeking to  establish dictatorial rule.

To say that no jobs can be found for millions of people is to infer that the need for the hands and brains of ordinary men and women has become static, or to say that jobs can be found when no industry abounds, is the counsel of foolish despair or worse. If we put to work on this great human problem as much money and brainpower as was expanded on World War II, a solution will be found.  However, the best solution well within the American tradition, is for the federal government to  get out of business and industry activities, while at the same time reducing taxes and restrictive regulations. Encourage rather than hinder, free enterprise, so that investment cash may flow into private businesses, creating millions of new jobs. Instead of giving "stimulus packages to Wall Street.

In addition to those who are unemployed, all sectors of American society suffer from inflation, that is every sector except that tiny group whose income or wealth is too great to allow them to feel any squeeze, so long as what they possess
is not totally expropriated. To some extent big labor and big business are able to brace themselves against the shock of surging inflation. The unions react by striking for, and obtaining higher wages, while big businesses respond with price increases.  Prices always stay ahead of wages, and as the two chase each other up the economic staircase, the pressures of spiraling inflation intensify.

Those who are poorly informed should not jump to the erroneous conclusion that I am saying that  rising wages and prices are the cause of inflation.  These factors are only the symptoms of economic illness; they do not cause inflation any more than fever and chills cause sicknesses. Governments cause inflation by debasement of the currency, by deficit spending, and pouring extra billions of dollars into circulation  which is far in excess of any amount warranted by increased productivity. Whenever there is more money to spend that there are good and services to buy, inflation results.  Inflation now  is threatening to ruin the middle class in industrialized nations around the world. Inflation since World War II has gone up more than 200% on many items.

The nightmare grows in part out of the dollar's shrinking value.  According to government's figures, its value is derived by comparing the purchasing power of the contemporary dollar with some base that is not fixed. At one time the base year was 1939,  but as the dollar grew smaller in comparison with that unit, the government's experts would move the base up to a year of greater inflation, so that the comparison would seem more encouraging and much smaller. If the 1939 base had been retained, the dollar today would have to be pegged at fifteen cents or less.

Remorseless operation of economic laws have much to do with the economic distress whenever money is debased, for it loses value by printing huge amounts of dollar bills. or by failing to back up the dollars with a sufficient quantity of precious metal. The United States has allowed the gold reserve to shrink.  Only public trust in the credit and financial solvency of the government has prevented a spectacular collapse. How large the federal debt can become without precipitating further economic collapse is a matter of conjecture.

No government can place itself outside the rule of economic laws, although governments do have one avenue of relief not available to corporations or industries, or individuals. This mode of relief is the repudiation of a nation's debt. As Greece is considering. Totalitarian dictatorships might use debt repudiation without economic ruin, but governments such as a republic  would be extremely lucky to survive a measure so desperate and so utterly a variance with its economic tradition. The monetary unit would collapse, and financial panic would sweep the country. Collapsing banks would precipitate a run on the entire  banking  establishment, including savings and loan associations. The scale of pandemonium and despair would make the stock market crash of 1929 look like a minor local upset by comparison.  The final result only could be institution of a tyrannical form dictatorship.

Somehow the debt has to be reduced, for at some future date its presence could represent a source of political strength to those who control the central government. Powerful  financial interests who own government bonds naturally are loyal to the ruling element, for they have economic ties with the government, and must protect their investment.  Alexander Hamilton in the  early days of the Republic saw this fact, so he advanced the notion of creating a public debt, as
a means of cementing the "right" people's  loyalty to the newly-established  government.

Economic interest therefor places a powerful lever in the hands of the master class who seek to gain support from the wealthy upper classes and their intellectual  allies. a threat to confiscate investment portfolios, or to repudiate part of
the debt, can force these reluctant groups to go along with whatever political  action the power elite contemplates. This is coercion, but there is also the lure of reward.  They could be promised refinancing of their holdings at more attractive notes, if they supported those who usurped total  political power. ( I am so happy that I was able to study economics before Maynard Keynes deficit program was foisted on the rich nations)

In order to reduce the debt that represents so many dangers to constitutional government, one of the major guidelines must be economy. As painfully unused as it is to economizing, the federal government has to trim its swollen budget. The process has to begin with Congress, it appropriates vast sums of money with light-hearted unconcern; they need to be taught economics before campaigning for Congress, and the value of money.  there are two key reforms needed—one, which is anathema to the bureaucrats, and the other which will arouse the massive opposition of the international bankers who control our money. And perhaps the change that can be engineered is first to repeal the income tax amendment.
This will save the middle class from being wiped out by oppressive taxation, reduce the huge size of the federal government, and sharply curb federal power, and restore to state and local governments the power usurped from them;   returning the funds they need to operate without federal handouts or controls. One can expect the federal bureaucracy to  fight desperately against this proposal.

Heaviest guns of the money masters will be brought against this reform:  abolish the Federal Reserve System---that private banking agency foisted on the American people in 1913 by a most amazing  conspiracy in American History. Only Congress truly or legally has the power to make our money and to regulate the value thereof. The international bankers have gained control of our money by illegal means, and have since netted Billions and Billons in interest.  A large portion of the national debt could legally be  eliminated at the stroke of a pen....pay off the system, repudiate the interest paid on "nothing",  and resume issuance of debt-free money, amounts of which will be regulated by increases in productivity of the national economy. Which can be done by producing more at home, and lesser imports...This can be accomplished only if conservative, patriotic Americans, determined to restore our constitutional republic..the radicals and liberals of the two major parties will coalesce, and the American political system will be divided between conservatives and liberal as it once was.

The fight to balance the budget is not as complex as Congress and Obama make it out to be....first, both should forget about cutting down on Social Security and Medicare... this money is not tax, but are premiums paid for a pension plan and medical care..what the government need to do is to stop robbing these accounts..

There are myriad other ways in which individual freedoms have been reduced, and no segment of the American Society is immune to the inexorable degradation of our cherished political traditions— and the gravest danger is that constant exposure breeds a sort of resignation  and in time what was once regarded as an evil becomes an accepted way of life. What we Americans now accept as the normal course of events would have driven our forefathers into flaming rebellion against what they would have considered "an intolerable tyranny."  How true, then, is the statement, "Yesterday's  radicalism becomes tomorrow's conservatism!"

545 vs. 300,000,000 People - By Charlie Reese

Mostly, you will not find these reports on the controlled mainstream media. The
purpose of the mainstream media is to keep the masses in a "Matrix" just like in
the movie. To get out of the "Matrix" requires information available from the
alternative media. Looking at the alternative media is akin to taking the "Red
Pill" as Neo does in the movie "The Matrix".

545 vs. 300,000,000 People - By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall.  No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating  deficits. The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House? Nancy Pelosi. She is the leader of the majority party. She and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want.  If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to.

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal  government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in  Iraq and Afghanistan ...

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power. Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they  alone, are responsible.

They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses.

Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees...

We should vote all of  them out of office and clean up their mess!

Charlie Reese is a former columnist of the Orlando  Sentinel  Newspaper.

What you do with this article now that you have read it... is up to you.
This might be funny if it weren't so  true.
Be sure to read all the way to the end:

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, & our nation was the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids.
What in the hell happened?
Can you spell 'politicians?'

I hope this goes around THE USA at least 545 times!!!  YOU can help it get there!!!

Norway suspect sought 'Christian war' against Islam

Islamophobia has reached a mass murder level in Norway as the confessed killer claims he sought to combat encroachment by Muslims into his country and Europe.

Anders Behring Breivik's bombing and shooting spree puts the spotlight back on Europe's uneasy adjustment to a shifting population.

FOLLOW:Faith & Reason blog on Twitter

According to The New York Times, he called for

... a Christian war to defend Europe against the threat of Muslim domination... And acquaintances described him as a gun-loving Norwegian obsessed with what he saw as the threats of multiculturalism and Muslim immigration.

Thomas Hegghammer, a terrorism specialist at the Norwegian Defense Research Establishment, told the times that Breivik's manuscript, like the major Qaeda declarations, include...

detailed accounts of the Crusades, a pronounced sense of historical grievance and calls for apocalyptic warfare to defeat the religious and cultural enemy.

But despite Breivik's fears of cultural shifts, Muslims today are only 6% of the region's population -- and just 3% of the population in Norway, 34% of them immigrants, according to a massive study by the The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life, released in January

It found Muslims will be more than one-quarter of the Earth's population by 2030 -- but only 8% of the population in Europe and 6.5% of the population in Norway. The Future of the Global Muslim Population analyzed statistics from United Nations data and census material from more than 200 countries and studies by 50 international demographers, using birth rates, death rates, immigration and more, for the study.

In Europe as a whole, the Muslim share of the population is expected to grow by nearly one-third over the next 20 years... rising to 8% in 2030. In absolute numbers, Europe's Muslim population is projected to grow from 44.1 million in 2010 to 58.2 million in 2030.

The Pew Forum is now working on similar comprehensive population studies for other religious groups. But statistics don't shed any light on the confessed actions of Breivik. According to wire service reports:

Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere told reporters that the attacks, believed to be the work of a man who has posted on Christian fundamentalist websites, showed you can't jump to conclusions about terror acts. He said most of the political violence that Norway has seen has come from the extreme right.

So, I have a bundle of questions now.

Who here knows exactly what's meant by Norwegian Christian fundamentalist? Should such terms be tossed about without definition? Is he a terrorist because he's Christian or a Christian who happens to be a terrorist or, if he's a terrorist, can he really be a Christian at all? And isn't that exactly the same points Muslims make about terrorists who claim to be Islamic?
