New genetic evidence links Spanish Americans of Southwest to Jews

By Talia Bloch · September 28, 2011

NEW YORK (JTA) -- In 1995, Demetrio Valdez, his wife, Olive, and some of their neighbors in Conjehos County, Colo., started a kosher food co-op.

"We wanted to harvest our own meat, but we couldn't get a good price for it, so we decided to do it kosher to make more money," said Valdez, 64, who has raised cattle all his life.

The co-op members, all non-Jews, flew in a rabbi from New York to instruct them in kosher slaughter. To Valdez's surprise, many of the practices introduced by the rabbi were ones that Valdez, a Catholic, had grown up with and maintained on his ranch.

"I saw that we do a lot of things the same," he recalled. "The rabbi was surprised, too."

Financial woes and a fire forced the co-op to close soon after it started, but Valdez's experiences with the rabbi -- the first Jew he had ever met -- lingered.

Since childhood he had heard rumors that his family had Jewish ancestors dating back to colonial New Spain when, as historical records show, a good number of Converso Jews -- Jews and their descendants forcibly converted during the Spanish Inquisition -- came to the New World. Many of the Conversos who had made the trek over had become Catholics in name only. They were Crypto Jews who in traveling across the Atlantic were attempting to flee the Inquisition.

"My parents never spoke about it, but everyone knew there was something there," said Valdez.

Now a new study in the Journal of Human Genetics has turned up fresh scientific evidence that the Spanish Americans of the Southwest must have had some Jewish forbears.

A group of researchers in the United States and Ecuador analyzed DNA from two communities who trace back to Spanish colonial times: one in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico, which includes Conjehos County, and one in the Loja Province of southern Ecuador.

The study found "observable Sephardic ancestry" in both communities and calculated Jewish ancestry among the Lojanos at about 5 to 10 percent and among the Spanish Americans, also called Hispanos, at about 1 to 5 percent.

"This study provides firmer evidence for what people have been conjecturing for up to 20 years now," said the study's director, Dr. Harry Ostrer, director of genetics and genomic testing at Montefiore Hospital of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

Over the past several decades, scholars have been pursuing stories like Valdez's and claim to have found remnants of Crypto-Jewish practices in communities in the U.S. Southwest and Latin America. Some Hispanos and Latin Americans also have come forward to claim a Crypto-Jewish past, with a small number embracing a Jewish identity outright.

"The ancestry is really dispersed throughout the communities," Ostrer said of his findings, which also concluded that along the maternal line, Native American ancestry is as high as 30 to 40 percent.

"You can't say person A has Jewish ancestry and person B does not. These genes were introduced some 500 years ago," he said. "Originally there was a fair amount of intermarriage, and then the communities remained isolated."

As the historical hypothesis goes, once the Inquisition arrived in the New World, Crypto Jews pushed on to the remote corners of the Spanish empire, such as New Mexico and Colorado, to escape the Church's reach. The San Luis Valley and Loja -- both located in the farthest corners of what were once Spanish holdings -- would therefore be expected to have discernable Jewish ancestry.

But the groundswell of interest in a Crypto-Jewish past among those of Spanish origin, particularly in the American Southwest, also has sparked controversy. A number of scholars have vociferously disputed any present-day evidence of Judaism, arguing that practices reported as Jewish had their origins in Seventh-day Adventism or fundamental Christianity.

"It certainly wasn't my intention to take sides in this argument," said Ostrer.

Rather, he and his team were, in part, picking up on previous genetic and clinical studies that found something surprising: Genetic mutations viewed as predominantly Jewish for a number of diseases, like breast cancer or Bloom's syndrome, were popping up at a notable rate among Hispanos.

A mutation for breast cancer called 185 del AG that is much more common among Ashkenazi Jews than other populations, for example, turns out to be prevalent among Hispanos as well. According to Dr. Paul Duncan, a medical oncologist in private practice in Albuquerque, N.M., only his Hispano and Ashkenazi Jewish patients carry the mutation.

This surprising overlap between Jews and Hispanos is the basis for a new book, "The Wandering Gene and the Indian Princess: Race, Religion, and DNA," by Jeff Wheelwright, to be published in January (W. W. Norton). Wheelwright, a freelance journalist, helped to set up Ostrer's study in the San Luis Valley.

Curiously, scientists calculate that 185 del AG arose approximately 2,000 years ago prior to any split between Ashkenazim and Sephardim.

In Loja, genetic traces of ancestry are even more apparent. Scattered across the remote villages of the province are nearly 100 people with Laron syndrome, which is marked by a severe short stature. When Dr. Jaime Guevara-Aguirre, a diabetes specialist based in Quito, Ecuador, who collaborated with Ostrer on his study, first began treating this group in 1987, the referring physician told him that legend had it that these people all descended from the same Sephardic Jew who had come over with the explorers.

In 1992 and 1993, scientists discovered that all Lojanos with Laron's carried the same mutation and shared it with one person in Israel and nine others in Latin America.

"When I saw this I thought there is a strong possibility that the story was true," said Guevara-Aguirre, because "what are the chances that in the billions of nucleotides the same mutation would happen twice at random? But Harry's study confirms it for the first time."

Ostrer's study stands out from previous studies in its scope. It is the first time that any researcher has looked beyond particular disease mutations or shared individual genetic markers to view the entire genome for large chunks of DNA that indicate shared ancestry.

"Statistically it is very difficult to see it any other way" other than that "these people [in Ostrer's study] were descendant from Conversos," agreed Duncan.

Back in the San Luis Valley, Maria Clara Martinez, a retiree who edits the local paper, La Sierra, said she wasn't "at all surprised" by Ostrer's findings. A genealogist who has amassed a database of more than 77,000 individuals from New Mexico and southern Colorado extending back to 1598, Martinez explained that everyone in the area is somehow related.

Martinez helped to publicized Ostrer's study, but did not get tested herself because, she said, "I'm afraid of needles."

Although she said she never heard of any ancestors in her own family who were Jewish, she has heard others speak of Jewish forbears or family practices. And then there was an ancestor of hers who married a woman from Portugal whose father was tried by the Inquisition.

"Community members were jealous of him, so they reported him, saying he had a tail," Martinez recalled. "He was cleared, but it's very likely he was Jewish, although it was never proven."

Turkey redraws Sykes-Picot

Turkey redraws Sykes-Picot

A new Bermuda Triangle has been spotted, but this one is in the eastern Mediterranean -- between Turkey, Cyprus and Israel, observes Eric Walberg

Turkey's foreign policy shift is now in full gear. Having kicked out the Israeli ambassador and rejected the UN Palmer Report, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says that Turkey plans to take its case against Israel's blockade of Gaza to the International Court of Justice, not alone, but with the support of the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the African Union. "The process will probably reach a certain point in October and we will make our application."

Israel's refusal to say "I apologise" has already proved to be very expensive, and will continue to reverberate, not just in the hollow halls of the ICC, but off the shores of Israel itself, as Turkish warships accompany flotillas breaking the siege, and when Turkey begins drilling for gas in waters that Greek Cyprus and Israel claim for themselves. It will echo when Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who US International Trade Undersecretary Francisco Sanchez said was "like a rock star", crosses the Rafah border to visit Gaza. No one can mistake Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or Cypriot President Dimitris Christofias for Elton John.

There are many reasons for the deterioration of the once smooth relations between Israel and Turkey. Firstly both nations have moved away from their secular roots -- Turkey with the return of Islam as a guiding principle in political life under the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in 2002, Israel with the rise of Likud in 1977 ending the long reign of Labour. Turkey is naturally returning to its traditional role under the Ottoman Caliphate as regional Muslim hegemon, while the Zionised version of Judaism has ended any pretence of the Jewish state being interested in making peace with the indigenous Muslims.

Israel's relations with both Cyprus and brotherly Greece -- both longstanding foes of Turkey -- have warmed up considerably since Israel killed nine Turks last year and Turkish-Israeli relations plunged. Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman became the first such Israeli official to visit Cyprus last September. Their Foreign Affairs people have been meeting regularly since, as it becomes clear that Israel is using Cyprus as its proxy in gas and oil exploration in the eastern Mediterranean.

While no one was looking, Greek Cyprus began exploring for gas off the coast. The project by the Texas-based Noble Energy prompted Erdogan and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) President Dervis Eroglu to hurriedly sign an agreement last week on delineation of the continental shelf, while the leaders were attending the United Nations General Assembly meetings. Ankara announced Turkish Petroleum Corporation has commissioned a Norwegian oil and gas firm to set up its own oil and gas exploration rig nearby -- accompanied by a warship. In Nicosia, Turkish Cypriot Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk vowed "to make every effort and show every kind of resistance to protect our rights and interests".

With the announcement of the exploration project, Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yildiz suggested the risks for Nobel are considerable. "I do not think they will undertake such a work in such a risky area, from a technical and a feasibility point of view." Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said Turkey's plans were "no bluff". The US Israel Lobby's Richard Stone called Turkey's actions "a reason for war".

The new friendship between Greece, Cyprus and Israel is a major headache for Turkey, but -- apart from possibly leading to war -- also has other drawbacks for the Greeks, their Cypriot cousins and the EU as a whole. The gas and oil drilling will put paid to the long-suffering attempt under UN auspices to reunite the island. Greek Cyprus has been divided since a Turkish intervention in 1974 triggered by a Greek-inspired coup. UN-sponsored peace talks between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots have stumbled since they were relaunched in 2008.

Davutoglu warned UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon at the UN General Assembly meeting in New York last week that the Greek Cypriot drilling plan will doom the island to permanent division. "If they claim they have their own area where they can do whatever they want, then, by implication, they accept that Northern Cyprus has its own area as well. This is a shift to a two-state mentality." In the latest move, the KKTC president proposed to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon this week that there be a mutual freeze in drilling or at least a joint committee to resolve the dispute. The Cypriot leaders will have a tripartite meeting with the Ban in New York at the end of October.

Hopes for Turkey's accession to the EU are also dashed. Referring to Cyprus taking on the rotating presidency of the EU next summer, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said, "If the negotiations [on Cyprus] do not end positively and the EU hands over the presidency to southern Cyprus, we will freeze our relations with the EU."

Cyprus says its hydrocarbon search is to the benefit of all Cypriots, but it fails to mention in its press releases that it is working jointly with Israel on this project. In effect, Israel is getting Cyprus to do its dirty work for it, as an Israeli-sponsored rig would be a red flag to the Muslim bull. This recapitulates the cozying up of Israel to Greece in the past year, their new military cooperation, and Israel's use of Greece this summer to prevent the Freedom Flotilla from setting out from Greek ports to break the Gaza siege. Cypriot President Christofias accused Turkey of being a regional "troublemaker", failing to point to the Israeli bull in the regional china shop.

While Cyprus and big guns such as Sarkozy and Merkel openly reject Turkey's admission into the EU, playing to their rightwing anti-immigrant base, sensible voices can still be hear. Secretary General of the Council of Europe Throbjorn Jagland said that Turkey was important for Europe, and that Erdogan's call in Cairo to create a secular constitution and order in Egypt and Middle East was "of utmost importance". At a Liberal Democratic Party meeting in Birmingham UK, Turkey's Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said, "The EU needs Turkey if it wants to remain as an important actor. Turkey will help the Union become a global economic player." Turkey's economy grew 9 per cent in 2010 as Europe's slid. Asked to describe the ruling AKP, Simsek said: "In issues such as family we are conservative. In economy and relations with the world we are liberal. And in social justice and poverty we are socialist."

But already Turkish opinion is turning against kowtowing to Europe, just as kowtowing to the US and Israel is no longer acceptable. Erdogan's spectacular reception on his visits to Egypt, Tunisia and Libya shows where Turkey is appreciated. It is the big winner in the Arab Spring, leaving the US, Israel and Europe to wonder where they fit in.

Hopes to turn a grateful Libya into a NATO base are vain, as Islamists immediately rose to prominence; much like the Communist resistance did in the aftermath to WWII, after bearing the brunt of the Nazi war machine. French President Nicolas Sarkozy should read his French history, including the humiliating consequences of France's last dabbling in the region -- its invasion of Egypt in 1956.

Can the West reshape Libya as it did post-WWII Europe to meet its goals of neocolonial hegemony? Not likely, as Turkey was pragmatic enough to get in on the ground and will be able to ensure that Libyans are not duped by their clever Western advisers. Ditto Tunisia and Egypt. The forceful and principled foreign policy moves of Davitoglu are leaving the West and Israel breathless in the new Bermuda Triangle.

Israeli whining about their trashed embassy in Cairo or their unceremonious expulsion from Ankara can impress no one. Just imagine the scenario if Cyprus is replaced by Egypt in the Bermuda Triangle, and a Turkish-Egyptian alliance decides to take on Israel. The current blockade of Gaza will look like child's play. Egypt controls the Suez Canal, and Turkey -- the eastern Mediterranean. One can only marvel that it has taken over 60 years for Israel's powerful neighbours -- with 20 times the population of Israel -- to realise their collective power and ability to impose a just regional order without any kowtowing to Washington.

What is surprising is that the AKP faces no domestic opposition to its policy with either Israel, Cyprus or the EU. The Republican People's Party is even competing with the AKP on who is more anti-Israel, protesting against plans to install a NATO early warning radar. The once-feared Islamists clearly represent the overwhelming Turkish sentiment, and geopolitical dictates are creating a fait accompli

Willingness to stand up for the nation's rights, and to stare down the Israeli enemy and the Islamophobic Euros is where it's at, and there is little the increasingly powerless US can do about it. The US better wake up soon or, like the EU, it will lose its true ally in the Middle East, and will merely speed up the consolidation of a pax turkana, a latter-day caliphate once again led by Turkey.

9/11 New Jersey police officer responsible for capturing five Israelis on GW Bridge

Some interesting anticipatory news articles indicating that AFP is in touch with what matters.......

9-11 Cop Breaks Silence

Scott DeCarlo

By Dave Gahary -

The New Jersey police officer responsible for capturing five Israelis who filmed and celebrated while the World Trade Center towers burned has broken his silence, agreeing to a Sept. 16 exclusive interview with AMERICAN FREE PRESS.

As AFP readers are no doubt aware, these are the same Israelis who were working under the direction of Urban Moving Systems, a Mossad front company at the center of Israeli involvement in the Sept. 11 attacks.

Sgt. Scott DeCarlo has never spoken to the media about the details of that day except for two 30-second cameo appearances in Internet videos from undetermined sources. In fact, DeCarlo confirmed that this is the first, and last, interview he will ever grant in regard to this subject.

DeCarlo revealed to AFP hidden details about the events of 9-11 that mainstream media venues should have uncovered 10 years ago, if not for their near-total blackout of meaningful coverage where Israel is concerned.

Although not scheduled to work that day, DeCarlo reported anyway and "was posted on the highway" to prevent traffic from entering New York City.

"There was a BOLO, which is a 'Be On the Look Out' for a particular van, perhaps loaded with explosives," explained DeCarlo, "that may have been on its way to destroy the George Washington Bridge."

DeCarlo explained: "It [the suspicious van] happened to come our way, and I grabbed my sergeant [DeCarlo himself was a patrolman at that time] and said: 'Hey, man, that's our van.' It wasn't the exact license plate given reported—it was off by one numeral—but I said: 'That's gotta be it; it's just too close.'"

He continued: "The van was coming off the [N.J.] Turnpike trying to get on Route 3. Traffic was rolling at two miles an hour, so we got in front of the van on foot, weapons drawn, and stopped it."

All five of the Israeli spies refused to exit their vehicle, so DeCarlo was forced to get physical.

"We asked them to get out of the van, but they didn't listen," he said. "So, we . . . put them in handcuffs and did it as quickly as possible."

AFP asked DeCarlo why he thought the Israelis refused to follow his orders. DeCarlo was unsure, but asked this writer, "You ever have a gun pointed at your head?"

DeCarlo then described what happened after the spies were dragged from their van. "When we removed them, one of the guys that was rather chatty said: 'We're not your enemy, we're your friend. Our enemies are your enemies,'" DeCarlo said. "At that point they said they were from Israel. They kept saying, 'Hey, we're on your side.'"

"We brought them over to the New Jersey State Police holding cells in the Meadowlands Stadium, and that's the last I saw of them," he said. Shortly after that, the FBI reportedly took over. The five Israelis were held for 10 weeks, but were eventually deported to Israel on charges of immigration violations. In November 2001, they appeared on an Israeli TV talk show discussing how they were in the U.S. "to document the event."

Sgt. DeCarlo asked AFP to request interested parties not to contact him.

Israel Positions Nuclear Subs Off Iran

New Israeli Dolphin-class submarine in Haifa port

By Keith Johnson -

Israel's submarine fleet is by far the most secretive of its strategic long-range manned arsenals. Unlike the Jewish state's other seafaring crafts, these submersibles never dock in any ports except their own, and their missions are such highly guarded secrets that only a few, even on board, are privy to what their assignment is and where it will next take them.

"Nobody knows where you are except for your crew and your direct commanders," said a former "Lt. Col. Oded" in a recent interview with Israel's Ynet news service. "Even your family doesn't know. They don't know what you're doing or when you'll be back. They know nothing."

Oded says he served 20 years in the Israeli navy and was commander of theLeviathan, one of two state-of-the-art 800-class Dolphin submarines that were donated to Israel by the German government. The Israelis later bought a third Dolphin for $350 million under an agreement in which German taxpayers would absorb 50 percent of the cost.

Though the whereabouts of these mobile doomsday machines are generally kept under wraps, the Israelis occasionally make their presence known. When that happens, the message is clear that they mean business and are prepared to strike at any given moment. That's precisely what happened in July 2009 when Israel sent one of its Dolphins on a high-profile cruise of the Suez Canal. Although the official line out of Israel was that they were merely conducting standard naval drills, it was clear to all that the real purpose of their presence was to flaunt their strategic reach in Iran's face.

In June 2010, all three of Israel's Dolphins arrived off the coast of the vilified Persian nation. The Sunday Times reported, "The submarines of Flotilla 7—DolphinTekumaand Leviathan—[were] sent in response to Israeli fears that ballistic missiles developed by Iran, Syria and Hezbollah, a political and military organization in Lebanon, could hit sites in Israel, including air bases and missile launchers."

The article added, "The deployment is designed to act as a deterrent, gather intelligence and potentially to land Mossad agents."

It's widely believed that these three submarines are often rotated, with only one maintaining a constant vigil in the region for any extended period.

According to a recent UPI article, "Five Dolphins is considered the minimum number required to keep two boats on patrol off Iran at all times."

That's why, to bring the fleet up to their desired quota, two more Dolphins are being constructed for Israel under a deal reached in 2006 whereby the German government agreed to absorb one-third of a total $1.27 billion price tag.

In July 2011, a deal was finalized for a sixth Dolphin submarine that will again be subsidized by Germany under the same arrangement. According to Der Spiegel, the subsidy was being offered to Israel as part of reparations for the "Holocaust." The first of the three is slated for delivery to Israel by 2012.

Unlike Iran, Israel is not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and has illicitly pursued a weapons program that, by some estimates, has put more than 600 nuclear-tipped warheads at its disposal.

Wall Street Invaded

Wall Street Protests

By Victor Thorn -

Beginning on Sept. 17, three organizations—Adbusters, Occupy Wall Street and U.S. Days of Rage-unleashed a campaign to radically disrupt, for two straight months, the heart of America's financial sector, in New York City. Events are also planned in 10 other cities, including Washington, D.C.

One of these groups, Adbusters (aka Culture Jammers), envisions a scene reminiscent of the recent London riots that devastated England's commercial district. On Aug. 10, Adbusters proclaimed, "Revolution is not a dinner party, nor an essay, nor a painting, nor a piece of embroidery; it cannot be advanced softly, gradually, carefully, considerately, respectfully, politely, plainly and modestly. A revolution is an insurrection."

When it comes to an honest appraisal of the Occupy Wall Street protests, radio talk show host Dave Orts of Push Back Now couldn't have been more forthright about the participants. On Sept. 13 he told this writer: "What most gets under their skin is that other people have more money than they do. Money is a great addiction, and today's youth have a desire to ascend up the financial ladder. They know the money is already there, but it's being held and not released by those on Wall Street."

Orts provided a fitting example. "When a 22-year-old college kid paying taxes on a summer job sees Jeffrey Immelt working on President Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board while his company General Electric didn't pay a cent in income taxes last year, they know something's wrong."

Although many Americans don't agree with the Days of Rage tactics, Orts gives them credit for being mobilized. "In order for us to remove a rock from our shoe, we have to take action. The rock doesn't go away on its own." However, he finds a certain amount of amusement in their naïve aspirations. "If anyone thinks they're going to peacefully assemble and take down Wall Street," Orts laughed, "on 9-11 both towers came crashing to the ground, but Wall Street still only remained closed for a few days."

The end result may also be a bit misguided. Orts noted: "The Days of Rage icon used on their posters is a communist model. The name Days of Rage connotes a group of people that are deeply disturbed by a societal evolution that is not fitting to what they want. Yet they view President Obama's political appointees and union leaders feeding off the top tier of government, and they feel betrayed. The promised redistribution of wealth isn't coming their way, so in essence they're saying, 'If you keep screwing around, you won't be around any longer.'"

WHAT THEY WANT

For their part, U.S. Days of Rage organizer Alexa O'Brien and her cohorts have made five demands:

1) Money should be removed from "buying politicians" who feed the Wall Street beast.

2) The resources of our nation shall no longer be used to coddle and benefit banksters and their minions.

3) The U.S. government should diligently rein in the parasitic destruction wreaked by Wall Street.

4) Our nation should no longer be held hostage by "too big to fail" banks.

5) Solutions should be found that stop the Federal Reserve from stealing our future.

O'Brien summarized their goals. "We have no choice but to focus on the sources of money. Both the Democratic and Republican parties set the bankster agenda because of the money."

BRINGING THE YOUTH

When asked to describe why leftist youths were so frustrated that they'd try to occupy Wall Street, Eric Verlo of Not My Tribe told this writer on Sept. 12: "Barack Obama promised hope and change, but it never happened. Now we're taking real change to the streets to show him how it's done."

He continued: "Our eyes have been opened to the fact that presidents don't have as much power as we thought they did. But compared to George Bush, Obama seems powerless."

When asked about the possibility of violence during their Days of Rage event, Verlo stated matter-of-factly, "It's hard to get people motivated if you say, 'Hey, come out and get beat up or slaughtered.'But when it comes to defending ourselves, if you want to swing back, that's everyone's free choice."

As to the locale of these demonstrations, Verlo put their views into perspective: "The youth organizers are very anti-capitalist, and Obama isn't delivering. Wall Street is where money changes hands, and they shouldn't be so influential. They're the real power center. They're in charge, and we intend to camp out until somebody responds to us."

PUPPETS

According to Greg Eddolls of the Strong Watchman website, Days of Rage organizers are parroting the Mideast's "Arab spring" uprisings, with one exception.

He told this writer on Sept. 13, "Participants from the younger generation want something, but it's based on ignorance because they don't even know what larger forces they're dealing with."

Specifically, Eddolls explained: "Mantras like 'Government for the People' sound like a noble cause until they start talking about redistribution of wealth. Those with a socialist mindset don't know what comes with it. In an Orwellian scenario, the government provides everything, and in exchange they also control everything."

Associated with this phenomenon, Eddolls sees radical transformations taking place in our nation: "Starting a business or going out and making a living are no longer the dominant theme in America. A new generation that still believes in individualism and hard work is fading, and instead they're more accepting of a collectivist message that's hidden within global government."

The planners behind this Days of Rage event are exploiting this sentiment. Eddolls elaborated: "To destabilize our current government, major civil unrest is needed. A stated aim of the anti-capitalists is to prevent the rich from being rich. So, they want to create panic on Wall Street, resulting in, they hope, massive bank runs. People will then remove all their cash, with the financial strain creating a great deal of turmoil."

When AFP inquired as to whether this scenario is part of a plot to weaken our country, Eddolls answered, "The New World Order is now a conspiracy fact, not a theory, that's been proven right over the past 15 years."

OBAMA'S RADICALS

It should be noted that two of the figures who are helping organize the U.S. Days of Rage are SEIU union leader Stephen Lerner and ACORN founder Wade Rathke. Both have direct ties to Barack Obama.

This connection to the president has deeper roots in a group known as the October 2011 Movement that contains a host of former Students for a Democratic Society members among its ranks. On Oct. 6, a "Seize DC happening" is planned where many of the above-mentioned groups intend to bring about a U.S. version of the Tahrir Square uprising in Egypt.

Of note, the Weather Underground, a violent band of 1960-1970s anarchists, formed as a splinter group from the SDS. The Weathermen were co-founded by none other than Bill Ayers. Not only did Obama launch his 1995 state senatorial career via a luncheon at Bill Ayers's Hyde Park home, it's commonly accepted in many circles that Ayers ghostwrote Obama's "autobiography."

On Aug. 18, investigative reporter Danette Clark described a previous version of this year's Sept. 17 event organized by the Weather Underground in Chicago: "The [Oct. 8] 1969 Days of Rage consisted of violent demonstrations and blowing things up. A commemorative statue of a murdered police officer in Haymarket Square was destroyed by a dynamite bomb. The blast scattered pieces of the statue onto the Kennedy Expressway and shattered nearly 100 windows. Weathermen and fellow demonstrators donning motorcycle and football helmets charged and attacked police officers [while] smashing windows in automobiles, buildings and homes."

Lerner, who serves on SEIU's International Executive Board, was President Obama's guest at the White House on four separate occasions. He is also orchestrating, behind the scenes, the Sept. 17 Occupy Wall Street rally.

Lerner's stated goals are to destroy JPMorgan Chase, collapse the stock market and destabilize the American power structure by rebuilding a new movement. On March 23, Lerner told the Washington Times: "How do we bring down the stock market? How do we bring down their bonuses? How do we interfere with their ability to be rich?"

One of Lerner's fellow organizers, Wade Rathke, founded the disgraced community advocacy group ACORN, while also acting as union president of the New Orleans branch of SEIU. Rathke referred to their coordinated Days of Rage efforts as an "anti-banking jihad."

As a past SDS member affiliated with Ayers, Rathke voiced his disgust with what he called "rats" who notified FBI agents about a left-wing plot to bomb the 2008 Republican National Convention in New Orleans. Coincidentally, Barack Obama began his career as the chief national trainer for Rathke's ACORN.

But the most unapologetically extreme member of Obama's reactionary force is Ayers, who described to Chicago magazine in Aug. 2001 the goal of 1969's Weather Underground Days of Rage: "Kill all the rich people. Break up their cars and apartments. Bring the revolution home. Kill your parents. That's where it's really at."

Later, he wrote joyfully of the widespread destruction: "The streets became sparkling and treacherous with the jagged remains of our rampage."

Ayers's literary flair is obvious, as his talents were later used to pen Obama's autobiography Dreams From My Father. Although mainstream media lapdogs have largely ignored their ties, Obama lives in the same elite Chicago neighborhood as Ayers and served with him on the Woods Fund. Obama later appointed Ayers head of the prestigious Annenberg Challenge.

14 CITIES MOST PRIMED FOR RIOTS

On Aug. 11, Chaz Valenza of Op-Ed News compiled a list of cities that, he felt, were powder kegs ready to erupt (as chronicled earlier this year in AFP, Detroit tops the list, suffering from 40 percent unemployment, a mere $14,000 average yearly income, 36 percent poverty and a 37 percent dropout rate, not to mention the nation's third-highest crime rate): 1.) Detroit; 2.) Miami Beach; 3.) Cleveland; 4.) Memphis; 5.) New Orleans; 6.) Buffalo; 7.) Milwaukee; 8.) St. Louis; 9.) Baltimore; 10.) Atlanta; 11.) Cincinnati; 12.) Long Beach; 13.) Newark; 14.) Philadelphia.

AFP First National Newspaper to Talk Honestly About 9-11

wtc

By Victor Thorn -

Within a week of the 9-11 attacks—at a time when questioning the government's official version of events was already considered almost seditious, AFP had already begun informing its readers that the Osama bin Laden-19 Arab hijackers story had more holes in it than a block of Swiss cheese.

Considering the intense shock to our nation, these were dangerous times to oppose the neo-con led administration. In the aftermath of this catastrophe, President George W. Bush upped the ante by threatening Americans with the consequences of exhibiting any "unpatriotic" tendencies.

"You're either with us, or you're with the terrorists," he sneered in what would become his style of cowboy diplomacy.

Bush's intentions were clear: If you dare investigate these obviously suspicious crimes, we'll marginalize you and brand you an enemy of the state. Later, realizing that their house of cards could come crashing down, Bush addressed the UN with this warning: "Let us never tolerate outrageous conspiracy theories regarding the attacks of Sept. 11."

Still, in AFP's issue no. 5, dated Sept. 24, 2001, Michael Collins Piper threw down the gauntlet by reminding subscribers of direct Mossad links to the first WTC bombing, in 1993. The following week, AFP asked about Israeli foreknowledge of these horrific strikes in New York and D.C.

Subsequent issues contained articles on the WTC controlled demolitions, fake cell phone calls, the military's incomprehensible stand-down, gangs of celebrating Israelis, pools of molten steel beneath Ground Zero, Osama bin Laden's doubles, and interviews with survivor William Rodriguez and 9-11 widow Ellen Mariani.

AFP also published a special report entitled 50 Unanswered Questions About 9-11, plus books such as Debunking 9-11 and Phantom Flight 93.

Without doubt, no event in the past decade has had such an impact on our lives as 9-11, not to mention the tentacles that sprung from it, including the Patriot Act, Homeland Security, TSA inspections, two atrocious foreign wars, color-coded terror alerts and astronomical spending.

From day one, AFP courageously stood at the forefront of what would become known as the 9-11 truth movement. Without AFP's contributions, it's likely that another similar attack would have already been leveled against the U.S. by now.

This special edition—containing much new information—is our tribute to those who died on 9-11, their families and all those who seek the truth about Sept. 11, 2001.

Obama Betrays Palestinian Leaders

Netanyahu Teaches Obama

By Keith Johnson -

Any doubt that the Oval Office often acts like a subsidiary of the Israeli government was soundly laid to rest on Sept. 21 when Barack Obama addressed the UN General Assembly in New York concerning the U.S. position on Palestinian statehood.

"Peace is hard work," said Obama. "Peace will not come through statements and resolutions at the United Nations. If it were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now."

This part of Obama's speech was a complete reversal to one given at the same podium in 2010 when he offered this impression: "When we come back here next year, we can have an agreement that can lead to a new member of the United Nations, an independent, sovereign state of Palestine living in peace with Israel."

Though Obama sounded then as if he would be the champion of such a cause, this year Obama confirmed that he would be standing in its way. Rather than reaffirming his commitment to achieving his previously stated objective, Obama instead chose to sidle up with the sole obstacle to peace in the Middle East: Israel.

"America's commitment to Israel's security is unshakable," Obama declared to the group of delegates. "Our friendship with Israel is deep and enduring."

At no time during his 36-minute speech did Obama make any mention of the pain and suffering the Palestinians have been forced to endure as a result of 63 years of Israeli occupation. However, when it came to Israel, Obama had no shortage of sympathetic words.

He said: "Let us be honest with ourselves: Israel is surrounded by neighbors that have waged repeated wars against it. Israel's citizens have been killed by rockets fired at their houses and suicide bombs on their buses. Israel's children come of age knowing that throughout the region, other children are taught to hate them."

Shortly after Obama met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, White House national security council spokesman Ben Rhodes told a group of reporters: "We would have to oppose any action at the UN Security Council, including, if necessary, vetoing."

So why is the U.S. desperately campaigning to thwart what is obviously an international consensus? The answer is clear: U.S. politicians are ultimately beholden to no one but the state of Israel. While Republicans and Democrats may haggle over domestic issues, one thing they unilaterally agree upon is the continued prosperity and security of the Jewish state.

As a prime example, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) recently showed his solidarity with the Obama administration by introducing legislation that would cut off funding to the UN in the event that it recognized Palestine as an independent state.

"Israel is one of America's strongest allies and friends, a beacon of democracy in the Middle East," said Hatch. "Make no mistake, there will be consequences associated with efforts to undermine the security of America's friends and allies."

New Jersey's Swelling Tent City

Lakewood, NJ

By Victor Thorn -

Five years ago ordained minister Steven Brigham established a tent city for the homeless that is located only three-quarters of a mile from downtown Lakewood, N.J. Brigham recently sat down with AMERICAN FREE PRESS to describe how this site, which was only supposed to provide a temporary home for Americans who are down on their luck, has now grown significantly over the years.

"Today, 70 people live on seven acres of land out in the woods," said Brigham. "There is no electricity except for generators that are periodically operated. We also don't have water except for what we carry in drums that is pumped from a well. So, our tent city has a frontier-town feel to it."

Brigham knows firsthand the travails of living hand to mouth, as he resides in a converted school bus parked on the premises. Helping his fellow occupants became, quite literally, a matter of life and death.

"Before setting up this camp, one local man died from pneumonia after living on the streets, while another froze to death in his car," Brigham told AFP.

After beginning their rural lifestyle outside of Lakewood, problems soon confronted them.

"We haven't requested a penny of government money," Brigham explained. "But that hasn't stopped legislators from trying to kick us out. Last year, we gathered together some wood and built 30 shanties that people could live in rather than tents. But the township council made us tear down every one of them."

The results were devastating. Brigham continued: "Last winter we suffered through a 30-inch snowfall that dismantled every tent. Imagine being kicked out of a 12-foot-by-12-foot shanty smaller than most people's backyard shed. Then the snow came and destroyed our tents."

To keep warm during the winter months, residents place tarps over their tents and huddle inside heavy-duty sleeping bags. Needless to say, none of them is looking forward to the arctic months of December, January and February.

When asked what they do for food, the minister replied: "Every night, a Vietnam vet that lives in town visits all the area pizza parlors to gather up what they haven't sold. He then drives them out here, where we have a communal-type kitchen. Everything is shared. We also get donations from churches, or when people have parties and they have leftovers."

With many news reports now verifying that American poverty is higher than at any time since the Great Depression, the demographics of those who've found themselves in this predicament cut across all socioeconomic lines.

"We have one resident who used to make over $100,000 per year in the textile market. But then the entire industry got outsourced and he lost everything," Brigham remarked sadly.

Despite the uncertainty and lack of resources, Brigham's spirits remain high.

"We have our fair share of hardships, like no running water or electricity," he said, "but nobody complains."

Instead, his companions decorate their tents with knickknacks, rugs and family photos, while some have even built makeshift white picket fences around their lots.

"The decorations give our people a sense of pride and ownership, as if they belong to a community," he said. "One of the guys even dragged an old piano out here, so now we can play music and sing at night. Without this sense of dignity and self-worth, the people here may lose any chance they had of regaining a purpose in their lives."

'Squatters' Can Prevail if Bankers Unable to Produce Original Note

www.deesillustration.com

By Pat Shannan -

When legal researchers began to say around 2004 that many banks could not foreclose on a home buyer because the bankers no longer held the original notes, federal judges put a few of the people who fought their foreclosures in jail. And when an Ohio congresswoman spoke about it on the floor of the House of Representatives, she was chastised for urging her constituents to "break the law." Today, however, courts are ruling against banks, and some home owners known to this writer have been exercising "squatter's" rights with possession for three years or more without making a single payment.

After witnessing more than 27,000 bankruptcies in only one county of her Toledo district in 2008, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) began to take notice of the number of home foreclosures that followed. After seeing the evidence exposing the scheme that none of the Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae mortgage creations in those years was on the up and up, she showed her outrage with an unprecedented speech urging all Americans to ignore any foreclosure notice and stay in their homes as squatters.

Establishment television news host Bill Moyers criticized Mrs. Kaptur on public television for encouraging people to break the law, which was merely another media subterfuge. Actually, Mrs. Kaptur was asking Americans to force the banks to obey the law.

Many people with mortgages began to take Mrs. Kaptur's advice. Some, especially in Florida, have already done so.

"James B." of Tampa learned from others that defense lawyers were demanding that the courts grant an order against foreclosing banks that could not produce the original note, and that federal judges were suddenly granting it. He stopped paying his mortgage in August 2008 and is still in his home. It is now worth only about a third of the $330,000 borrowed against it in 2006. "Dewey T." of Orlando went to jail in 2005 for two years for promoting a program—called a "scheme" by federal prosecutors—that taught mortgagees how to fight with these legal tools to avoid foreclosure. The bottom line was simple: If the bank didn't have the original, signed note because it had been sold so many times nobody could find it, the bank could not legally foreclose for non-payment.

In 2008 after his release, longtime acquaintance Dewey told AFP, "The same federal judge that sentenced me to jail has now ruled 14 times in favor of the defendant who was standing on the same statutes that we were teaching."

How could this be? He says that at the time of his legal problems, these federal judges, who always have inside information, had heavy holdings in Fanny-Freddie stocks and had prejudicial reason to rule against him. But when the housing bubble collapsed in 2007 and exposure of the fraud was inevitable, judges sold their shares and began to rule fairly on the law again.

They continue to do so today, and in Florida, where property values have now nosedived to as little as one seventh of the mortgaged value five or more years ago, Americans are encouraged to not acquiesce to bankers' demands, but instead put up a legal fight. It appears that now they can win, and the first step is a demand to "produce the note."

A Hare-Raising Tale: Couple Fined $4M

John & Judy Dollarhite

By Dave Gahary -

For almost two years, federal officials have been harassing a family in Nixa, Mo. for selling too many pet rabbits in one year. Their story is a prime example of federal government overreach and meddling that has turned into a nightmare for John and Judy Dollarhite.

On Sept. 14, AFP conducted an exclusive 90-minute interview with the Dollarhites, who explained every twist and turn of this cautionary tale.

"We wanted to teach our teenage son some responsibility, where food came from, those types of life's lessons," explained Mrs. Dollarhite. She said she originally contacted the USDA to see if the family needed licensing to sell rabbit meat. They didn't.

"We found out pretty quickly that you couldn't make money selling rabbit meat," said Mrs. Dollarhite. So, they turned their attention to selling the rabbits as pets after discovering strong demand for these animals. This is where their problems began.

"Our error in judgment," said Mrs. Dollarhite, "was assuming that if you didn't need a license to sell meat for human consumption, why would you need a license to sell pet rabbits that sat on your lap?"

In November 2009 they got a knock on their door from a USDA official with no badge or ID. Then, a rude and aggressive Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) inspector visited them in January 2010.

Not hearing back from these inspectors after eight weeks, Dollarhite said he called the USDA's Washington, D.C. office and was told, "We're going to make an example of you and prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law." Dollarhite asked what that meant, and was eventually told, "You'll have to wait for my report." The official then hung up on him.

Bartering away their rabbitry on advice from their attorney, the couple heard nothing until they got a certified letter from USDA in April 2011. The Dollarhites told AFP, "The USDA's letter stated that, based on their investigation, we had sold 619 rabbits, and the fine for that was $3.9 million. But in good faith, they would give us a settlement of $90,643 that we could pay with our credit card. They added that we had until the end of May to do so."

"In our best year," explained Judy, "We sold $4,600 in gross sales." The outrageousness of their situation is apparent. With less than $5,000 in annual sales derived from a pet project for their teenage son, the federal government is now requesting nearly $100,000 in penalties.

AFP asked where the fine stood right now. "We're not paying it," said Mrs. Dollarhite. "I don't know where they stand, but we're not paying it." Her husband added: "I'm not paying a dollar. They had their chance. I don't believe that we are within their jurisdiction, because the state of Missouri does not require a license."

Nato's real purpose: "To keep the Germans down"

A view I heard express in Russia a couple of years ago was that NATO is run by about 1500 families, mainly Jewish in origin. The fact that the former communist countries of eastern Europe that wished to join NATO all have to enshrine in their legal system Holocaust denial laws, speaks for itself. In January 1999 Poland enacted such laws, and in April it joined NATO, by June the first academic, from Opolen University, was before the courts: Dr Dariusz Ratajczak. The court's sentence destroyed his career.
That's how it works for individuals!

COMMENTARY

Germany and the Purpose of NATO

By GUILLERMO COLETTI

I have often considered writing about the real purpose of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, as I see it. However, lack of means to substantiate a number of my suspicions was a major reason of discouragement.

"Lord Ismay, Nato's first Secretary General, said about Nato's purpose: 'To keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the Germans down'."

 Die Welt, May 18, 2001, page 8

Now I have at my disposal something that can help me break the ice: an American General speaks openly, on national television, on the real reason for the existence of NATO. What he has to say is quite interesting for the uninitiated as well as for the irreverent and the perennial skeptic. I will use this opportunity to explain some of my initial ideas on this matter.

Adolf Hitler, simultaneously with Mussolini, and other European leaders, was involved in an extraordinary effort to eradicate the threat of Bolshevik tyranny from Europe. The stability of the governments they led was threatened via the USA as much, or perhaps more, than any danger that could have originated in Moscow.

When Hitler's defense of Europe was forced into the military alternative, the United States made an alliance with Stalin. That to me was an indication that America was becoming friendlier to Communism than to the traditional values of Western Europe. We know that American intervention resulted in a greater and stronger Soviet Russia. The Communists have indeed a debt ofgratitude to America for the expansion of Bolshevism.

But when the Second World War was over, America "agitated" the anti-Communist cause and formed NATO! Why NATO? It all sounded very phony to me, because if America had truly stood against Bolshevism it should have joined Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco, instead of Josef Stalin. America, of course, has never admitted to have fought on the wrong side.

I can't help but asking myself when was NATO a real problem for the solidity of Soviet Communism? Certainly not when Russian tanks and the Red Army occupied the streets of Prague, or Budapest. The anti-Communism of the American Establishment has always been as serious as an Abbot-and-Costello movie.

However, America's true concern was what Germany represented and what to this day survives in the German. Elie Wiesel expressed similar sentiments, when he advocated that every Jew must have some room in his heart for hatred against the Germans. The great difference between Wiesel, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and "Ike" Eisenhower is that Wiesel has expressed his emotions with more sincerity. The real hazard to the American Way, the America of the Gay Pride Parades and Martin Luther King Day, was not Bolshevism, but the Traditional Western values that Germany had tried to maintain at the expense of a multitude of sacrifices.

On April 24, 1999, NBC aired John McLaughlin's "One on One." The show had the participation of two guests: Lieutenant General William Odom and Professor Harvey Sapolsky. We are going to review same of the remarks made by General Odom.

General William Odom was introduced as a graduate from West Point, who obtained his PhD at Columbia. He served in President Carter's National Security Council and during President Reagan's administration in the Office of the Army Chief of Staff for Intelligence and for the director of Reagan's National Security Agency. He is currently director of International Security Studies at the Hudson Institute and professor of Public Policy and Organization in the Department of Political Science at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he is also the Director of the Security Program. Gen. Odom authored six books, the latest of which is The Collapse of Soviet Military.

What I have always suspected as the real purpose of NATO was disclosed, much to my surprise, right at the beginning of the show by Gen. Odom: "(NATO) was created not as most people think to defend against the Soviet military threat. The French didn't even mention the Soviet Union in the debate for it. They wanted NATO to deal with the German question. The British wanted NATO to keep the U.S. in Europe."

Gen. Odom added, still remarkably candid, that "the expansion of NATO is for the same reason; the German question versus Poland, Czechoslovakia and Hungary is put to bed if there is a NATO roof over it."

The type of policy advocated by this American General is strikingly similar to the policies the Germans were accused of implementing during the Third Reich era, in the Nuremberg Trials. Here are two more passages of this conversation between McLaughlin and Gen. Odom:

Mr. McLaughlin: Are we supposed to run Europe?

Gen. Odom: It pays. Yes.

Mr. McLaughlin: Why does it pay?

Gen. Odom: You are richer today because of it. We've been in Korea and Japan and Germany forever, and It's paid ... If you look back and see what's happened over the years, we've gotten richer and richer and richer.

And then, Mr. McLaughlin: Can the United States defend its interests in Europe without NATO?

Gen. Odom: No.

One of Odom's comments brings to public attention a second player in the game, further substantiating the Germanophobic character of NATO: "In 1994, the British foreign secretary said it would be better to have the Russians on the Adriatic than the Germans."

I hope that this brief article will bring some light to those who still don't understand why Dresden was destroyed and why millions of Germans were exterminated in American and Russian concentration camps at the end of the war.

Those who desire to verify the veracity of these quotes can order their own transcript of "One on One" from:

Federal News Service

Washington, DC 20045
(202) 347-1400

One of the best indications of the correctness of the above contention is the simple fact that while the U.S. military is scrambling to maintain its troop strength in Iraq, it is not even discussing the redeployment of forces from Germany. After all, they are there - just as in Iraq - for the purpose of OCCUPATION!

Ahmadinejad Dismisses Propaganda Campaign against Iran as "Futile"

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stressed growing support for Iran among the world nations, and added that enemies' media and propaganda campaign against Tehran has and will fail to yield any result.

Addressing a gathering of the war disabled in Tehran on Wednesday evening, Ahmadinejad said that today many nations of the world are supporting and standing right beside the just cause of the Iranian nation.

He pointed to the enemies' negative and fabricated news on Iran, and noted, "The West's non-stop media campaign and propaganda against the Iranian nation and revolution will produce no effect."

"Iran's enemy was once deployed along the country's borders with all its military, political and propaganda means and power, but now they are not immune from the impacts of the influence and the revolution of the Iranian revolution even at home," Ahmadinejad continued.

"Because today, people even in the heart of the US, people are crying out against the hegemonic system," he added.

Earlier, Ahmadinejad had underlined that the growing waves of popular uprisings and revolutions in the Middle-East and North Africa would soon reach the European and American coasts.

Addressing a group of American media chiefs and top figures in New York, President Ahmadinejad pointed to the uprising of the world nations against dictatorial regimes, and stated, "The wave of awakening that is sweeping the world will reach Europe and the US in future."

"There is no doubt about it," Ahmadinejad reiterated, and added, "Therefore, the western countries that are defending dictators should revise their attitude."

Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei had earlier stressed that the European continent would soon experience popular uprisings and revolutions sweeping the Middle-East and North of Africa at present.

"This awakening move will certainly advance to the very heart of the Europe and the European nations will rise against their politicians and rulers who have fully surrendered to the US and the Zionists' cultural and economic policies," the Leader said in May.

Several European countries, including Spain, Greece, France and Britain have thus far witnessed similar massive protests against their governments' policies.

Iran Urges UN to Launch Missions in Bahrain, Yemen

TEHRAN (FNA)- Members of the Iranian Parliament in a statement called on the United Nations to urgently deploy missions in Bahrain and Yemen to halt the brutal clampdown on innocent people and stop human rights violations in both countries.

The lawmakers condemned brutality against the innocent people in Bahrain and Yemen, and urged the UN "to honor its obligations".

The legislators further urged the United Nations to take up responsibility and start direct interference in Bahrain and Yemen by sending special envoys to these two countries.

The statement signed by 212 deputies reminded that Saudi Arabia's main role in the mass killings and clampdown of people in Yemen and Bahrain shows the weak and fragile conditions of Ali Abdullah Saleh and Al-Khalifa regimes.

The Iranian lawmakers further blasted the western countries' double-standard criteria in dealing with popular protests and human rights, and underlined that the West's silence on the massacre of the people in these two Persian Gulf states unveils the western states' dishonesty in advocating human rights and democracy.

"Silence from the Western powers on the brutal repression shows those states have not been honest with their allegations as human rights champions," the statement reiterated.

Iranian MPs expressed their concern to the regime of King Hamad Isa Bin Al Khalifa of Bahrain over the repression of protests by the opposition, made up mostly by Shiite Muslims.

Since the beginning of 2011, the Muslim world has witnessed popular uprisings and revolutions similar to what happened in Iran in 1979. Tunisia saw the overthrow of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in a popular revolution in January, which was soon followed by a revolution which toppled Hosni Mubarak in Egypt in February.

Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Saudi Arabia and Yemen have since been the scene of protests against their totalitarian rulers, who have resorted to brutal crackdown on demonstrations to silence their critics.

Bahrain and Yemen, however, have experienced the deadliest clashes. Anti-government protesters have been holding peaceful demonstrations across Bahrain since mid-February, calling for an end to the Al Khalifa dynasty's over-40-year rule.

Violence against the defenseless people escalated after a Saudi-led conglomerate of police, security and military forces from the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) member states - Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar - were dispatched to the tiny Persian Gulf kingdom on March 13 to help Manama crack down on peaceful protestors.
