Political Correctness: A War that Never Really Ended
New York magazine's Jonathan Chait took a 2x4 to the proverbial hornet's nest earlier this week when he penned a nearly 5,000-word essay under the provocative headline, "Not a very PC thing to say: How the language police are perverting liberalism".
For those not familiar with the term, PC refers to politically correct - a derogatory description coined in the 1990s to label those contending, in part, that language was a weapon used by the powerful to deny the interests of the oppressed ... "In a short period of time, the PC movement has assumed a towering presence in the psychic space of politically active people in general and the left in particular," he writes. And the end effect is that it is causing some writers to avoid controversial topics, lest they be subjected to online opprobrium that often crosses over to real-world threats. |
German Judge Rules: Anti-Zionism is Code for Anti-Semitism
... In an unprecedented case heard half a year after these violent anti-Israel demonstrations, last week in Essen, German Judge Gauri Sastry convicted 24-year-old Taylan Can for incitement against an ethnic minority for events at a July 18, 2014, anti-Israel demonstration in the town ... Can was prosecuted for his use of the term "Zionist" as incitement against a minority. During the hearing, Can claimed he was not an anti-Semite and had nothing against the Jewish people but only against the Zionist state. In response, Judge Sastry is quoted by Die Welt saying, "'Zionist' is the language of anti-Semites, the code for 'Jew.'" Sastry's judgment, which does not form a binding precedent in German law, essentially semantically equates anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism.

Tragic School Stories
New York's schools are the most segregated in the nation, and the state needs remedies right away. That was Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch's message to New York's governor and Legislature. She said that minority children are disproportionately trapped in schools that lack teaching talent, course offerings and resources needed to prepare them for college and success. Simply calling for more school resources will produce disappointing results. There are several minimum requirements that must be met for any child to do well in school. Someone must make the youngster do his homework, ensure that he gets eight to nine hours of sleep, feed him breakfast and make sure that he behaves in school and respects the teachers.

Where Does the Six Million Figure Come From?
One of the most well-known, if not iconic, facts known about the Holocaust is the number of Jewish victims killed by Nazi Germany up through the end of World War II. Perhaps not surprisingly, it is also this number - six million - that Holocaust deniers aim at when trying to discredit the essential nature of the Holocaust. Where did the number six million come from? ... The number seems to have first been mentioned by Dr. Wilhelm Hoettl, an Austrian-born official in the Third Reich and a trained historian who served in a number of senior positions in the SS. In November 1945, Hoettl testified for the prosecution in the Nuremberg trials of accused Nazi war criminals ... "Six million" is not, and was never intended to be, a precise accounting.

Just what is the basis for this familiar figure? ... This figure was not the result of any careful investigation, research, or calculation. The only specific evidence presented for it to the Nuremberg Tribunal was the hearsay testimony of former SS officer Wilhelm Höttl (sometimes spelled Hoettl), who said that he recalled it from a remark by Adolf Eichmann, the wartime head of the Jewish affairs section of Himmler's Reich Security Main Office (RSHA).

How Many Jews Died in the German Concentration Camps?

It has been a common belief that about six million Jews died in these camps, intentionally killed in accordance with a grand program for the physical extermination of the entire Jewish population of Europe ... Our general conclusion must be that the question posed in this article's title cannot be answered with any precision as long as we have recourse only to the above-mentioned sources. The general magnitude was certainly half a million, but the actual number of Jews who died in the German concentration camps might well have been as low as 300,000 or as high as 600,000.

Serbia's President Cites Jewish 'Overrepresentation' in Commemoration Remarks
Serbia' President Tomislav Nikolic was urged to apologize for a controversial remark he made during a ceremony in Belgrade to commemorate the Holocaust and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. He declared that the Nazis targeted the Jews because of their "overrepresentation" of Jews in certain prestigious professions. Although the main focus of the Nikolic's speech was the importance of remembrance, he also said that ''for the Nazis the biggest threat was seen in the Jewish people, probably on the account of their characteristics and being prominent in the prestigious professions in the domains of finances, art and science."

Jewish Group Protests 'Hitler's Walk' Sign in British Village
A Cornish village has angered the Jewish community after agreeing to reinstate a sign saying Hitlers Walk. The sign for a park overlooking Mevagissey was taken down by the now-defunct Restormel Council in 2005 after complaints that it was inappropriate. Now Mevagissey Parish Council has ordered a new sign, saying that is what local people call the park ... The park, on a sloping site a little smaller than a football pitch at the top of Polkirt Hill, was named in the 1930s after a dictatorial local councillor, who was nicknamed Hitler. Parish councillor John Daniel, who has campaigned for the sign's reinstatement, said: "Local people have known it as Hitlers Walk since the 1930s."

In London, 'Extreme-Right' Group Protests 'Jewification' of Britain
An extreme-right anti-Semitic group has called for a demonstration in London's Stamford Hill in March to protest against the "Jewification of Great Britain". According to The Jewish Chronicle, news of the march, called "Liberate Stamford Hill", has spread on Twitter and Facebook, with organiser Joshua Bonehill-Paine calling on his followers to "fight back" against the "Jewification" of the predominately Orthodox Jewish area of North London. Posters are promoting the rally. One post on Twitter shows a cartoon man with a big nose and kippah. The text reads "Jewification: Where Jewish culture occupies White countries, rendering them unrecognizable. #LiberateStamfordHill."

CIA, Israel Plotted Senior Hezbollah Commander's Killing: Report
The CIA and Israel's spy agency Mossad were behind an elaborate plot to kill Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh in a 2008 car bomb attack in Syria, the Washington Post reported." Citing former intelligence officials, the newspaper reported that US and Israeli spy agencies worked together to target Mughniyeh on February 12, 2008, as he left a restaurant in the Syrian capital Damascus. He was killed instantly by a car bomb planted in a spare tire on the back of a parked car, which exploded shrapnel in a tight radius, the Post said. The bomb, built by the United States and tested in the state of North Carolina, was triggered remotely by Mossad agents in Tel Aviv who were in communication with Central Intelligence Agency operatives on the ground in Damascus.
