Institutionalized settings are especially difficult for Holocaust survivors

 





House resolution aims to help Holocaust survivors

(JTA) -- The House of Representatives has introduced a resolution aimed at helping Holocaust survivors in the United States in need of in-home care.

U.S. Reps. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) and Frank Wolf (R-Va.) introduced a resolution Sept. 29  to raise awareness of the social service needs of Holocaust survivors -- specifically the need for them to be able to age in place.

The resolution, which was referred to the House Education and Labor Committee, expresses congressional support for efforts that help Holocaust survivors in America continue to live at home and applauds nonprofit organizations such as The Jewish Federations of North America for their work honoring and assisting Holocaust survivors.

It also urges the Obama administration and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to provide Holocaust survivors with needed social services through existing programs, and to develop and implement programs that ensure Holocaust survivors are able to age in place in their communities and avoid institutionalization during their remaining years.

Of the approximately 127,000 Holocaust survivors living in the United States, more than three quarters are older than 75 -- a majority are in their 80s and 90s. Some two-thirds of the survivors in America are living alone, and many lack the financial resources for basic necessities such as proper housing and health care. 

Most Holocaust survivors fall beneath the federal poverty threshold that would place them at risk of institutionalization. Institutionalized settings are especially difficult for Holocaust survivors, research has shown, because such environments reintroduce the sights, sounds and routines reminiscent of their Holocaust experiences.

Wasserman Schultz said the United States has "a moral obligation to acknowledge the plight and uphold the dignity of Holocaust survivors to ensure their well-being in their remaining years."

Since then they have shaped and controlled the minds of all but a seeming few of us in varying degree with almost no opposition or competition from any alternative worldview. So now most of us are mentally trapped in the box the chosen have made for us, which we have lived in all our lives. Only a few have managed to avoid it or escape it, or to even sometimes see outside of it, and so actually "think outside of the (Jewish) box." --Michael Santomauro

On the U.S. Census I have to call myself Caucasian. There is not "Jewish" ethnicity listed. But I certainly don't consider myself white.

Not a physical marker? I can tell someone who's Jewish seven times out of ten just by looking at them. No physical markers, you say? It is also often relatively easy to identify someone physically who is Irish, Scandanavian, Slavic, etc. No physical markers?

I have a Jewish ancestor about 3 generations ago. May I identify as Jewish?

I haven't a clue what this means & I don't give a fig how you identify yrself or what reason you use to justify doing so.

So the above comment was yr last on this subject. No more. If you attempt to continue this ridiculous line, you'll be moderated. I don't have patience for this narischkeit.

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and motor torpedo boats of the Israeli Navy, on June 8, 1967, during the Six-Day War.[2] The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two Marines, and one civilian), wounded 170 crew members, and severely damaged the ship.[3] At the time, the ship was in international waters north of the Sinai Peninsula, about 25.5 nmi (29.3 mi; 47.2 km) northwest from the Egyptian city of Arish.[1][4]

Both the Israeli and U.S. governments conducted inquiries and issued reports that concluded the attack was a mistake due to Israeli confusion about the identity of the USS Liberty.[5] Some survivors, in addition to some U.S. diplomats and intelligence officials involved in the incident continue to dispute these official findings, saying the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty was not a mistake,[6] and it remains "the only maritime incident in U.S. history where [U.S.] military forces were killed that was never investigated by the [U.S.] Congress."[7]

In May 1968, the Israeli government paid US$3,323,500 as full payment to the families of the 34 men killed in the attack. In March 1969, Israel paid a further $3,566,457 in compensation to the men who had been wounded. On 18 December 1980, it agreed to pay $6 million as settlement for the U.S. claim of $7,644,146 for material damage to the Liberty itself.[8]

On December 17, 1987, the issue was officially closed by the two governments through an exchange of diplomatic notes.[9]

So Cal A3P Welcomes New Members to the Team

The American Third Position team in Southern California hosted a welcome event for its many new members in the region, highlighting the team's continued growth, reports organizer Allen Polk.

"Many of the dozens of folks from Southern California who have joined the party over the past several months jumped at the opportunity to meet with one another and with leaders of the party," Mr. Polk said.

"Party Chairman William D. Johnson, and Director Kevin MacDonald, PhD, were on hand to welcome new members to the Southern California team and to share with them reports of party activity throughout the country."

"With so many new people joining the party in our area, it goes to show that there is a strong correlation between the extent of our grassroots activism and the growth of our team", said Brian Alexander, a member of the So Cal team.

"People see reports of our activism and want to get involved", he added.

The welcome event was a great way for new members to get to know one another, and many of the new members quickly turned their attention to activism, with plans being made to begin outreach efforts in San Diego and in the foothills of Los Angeles.

"The event was a success, and we plan to hold similar events every quarter," said Mr. Polk.

"Those interested in getting involved with our local functions are encouraged to email the So Cal team at socal@american3p.org."

A3P's Message Delivered to Thousands at Bethlehem Celtic Fest

American Third Position activists from Pennsylvania and New Jersey distributed thousands of fliers at the Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival in Bethlehem, PA , on September 25 and 26, reports our regional correspondent, Charles Dickenson.

Our activists networked and socialized with the very large and sympathetic crowd, handing out "American Jobs for American Workers" and "Globalization Not a Good Thing" fliers, and disseminating the policies and platform of the party," said Mr. Dickenson.

This event, in its 23rd year, was sponsored by the Celtic Cultural Alliance, a nonprofit outfit, in an effort to further promote Celtic heritage and culture in the region.

"Our activists were met with enthusiastic curiosity from the other attendees who were deeply troubled by the blatant bias against white Americans by the current political establishment.

"The city of Bethlehem, once a significant industrial powerhouse, is now a city in decline due to the foreign outsourcing of manufacturing that has led to the demise of the once mighty American industrial icon, the Bethlehem Steel Corporation," he continued.

"With the city in a steady downward trend, the mostly European descended inhabitants (81.85% according to the 2000 U.S. Census) are looking for answers to the social and economic quagmires created by the current political establishment, and the American Third Position has the solutions which can put them back on track."
