Dear New York Times Reader,

Today marks a significant transition for The New York Times as we introduce digital subscriptions. It's an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in The Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high-quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform. The change will primarily affect those who are heavy consumers of the content on our Web site and on mobile applications.

This change comes in two stages. Today, we are rolling out digital subscriptions to our readers in Canada, which will enable us to fine-tune the customer experience before our global launch. On March 28, we will begin offering digital subscriptions in the U.S. and the rest of the world.

If you are a home delivery subscriber of The New York Times, you will continue to have full and free access to our news, information, opinion and the rest of our rich offerings on your computer, smartphone and tablet. International Herald Tribune subscribers will also receive free access to NYTimes.com.

If you are not a home delivery subscriber, you will have free access up to a defined reading limit. If you exceed that limit, you will be asked to become a digital subscriber.

This is how it will work, and what it means for you:

  • On NYTimes.com, you can view 20 articles each month at no charge (including slide shows, videos and other features). After 20 articles, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber, with full access to our site.
  • On our smartphone and tablet apps, the Top News section will remain free of charge. For access to all other sections within the apps, we will ask you to become a digital subscriber.
  • The Times is offering three digital subscription packages that allow you to choose from a variety of devices (computer, smartphone, tablet). More information about these plans is available at nytimes.com/access.
  • Again, all New York Times home delivery subscribers will receive free access to NYTimes.com and to all content on our apps. If you are a home delivery subscriber, go to homedelivery.nytimes.com to sign up for free access.
  • Readers who come to Times articles through links from search, blogs and social media like Facebook and Twitter will be able to read those articles, even if they have reached their monthly reading limit. For some search engines, users will have a daily limit of free links to Times articles.
  • The home page at NYTimes.com and all section fronts will remain free to browse for all users at all times.

FDA Halts Shipments Of Kosher Baby Formula 'Materna'

FDA Halts Shipments Of Kosher Baby Formula 'Materna'

NEW YORK (CBS 2) --  Some local mothers have been driven to a frenzy after a brand of kosher baby formula was pulled from store shelves.

The Food and Drug Administration stopped allowing Materna, a formula made in Israel. The FDA said "certain nutrients were inadequately declared on the label and there were also significant labeling violations." However, the agency did not specify if there was anything dangerous about the formula.

At Pomegranate Grocery in Brooklyn, the coveted item was out of stock and had some "freaking out."

"I'm going to every store to find it," Zissy Yablonski told CBS 2's Demetra Ganias.

Yablonski said she needed the brand because her son "couldn't tolerate the other ones."

"The Materna is very light. It fills the baby and it's light," she said.

While there are alternatives to the formula, some were found to be two and a half times the price. Another important issue concerning Materna was that it is made under the supervision of a rabbi that adheres to a higher standard and is much revered by the community.

Leah Tratner is a grandmother whose family swears by the elusive formula. She said her family used to buy the formula while they lived in Israel and "loved it."

"It's been crazy. It's like they're looking for the winning lottery ticket," Pomegranate Grocery manager Gabe Boxer said.

As families continues to scoop up limited supply of the formula, the Materna website promised the company was working around the clock to resolve the issue.

SOUND-OFF: Have you been affected by the shortage of Materna baby formula?  Lets us know about your experience in the comments section...

Re: Alan Dershowitz: Israel Has the Right to Attack Iran's Nuclear Reactors Now

He's a wife-beater, too, apparently.  His victim was his first wife Sue Barlach.  He allegedly beat her up so bad after she tossed out his important law papers when she found out he was cheating on her, that she required intensive care in a hospital.  Then he allegedly divorced her and stripped her of custody of their 2 sons, so subsequently she allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge. Of course, Dershowitz was able to not only keep all of this out of the papers at that time (back in the mid 70s), he has subsequently snuffed out any mention of her on the internet until some internet reporters dug up this skeleton and posted their articles about this, with eye-witness testimonies, etc., on the internet.  Google "Dershowitz first wife Sue Barlach" for the details.  The man is a total psychopath.

Israel Has the Right to Attack  Iran's Nuclear Reactors Now
Iran's recent attempt to ship arms to Hamas  <http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2011/03/16/50-tons-of-smuggled-weapons-seized/> in Gaza is an act  of war committed by the Iranian government against the Israeli government.  The Israeli Navy seized the ship, loaded with weapons designed to kill  Israeli civilians, and traced the weapons back to Iran. Nor is this the first  act of war that would justify a military response by Israel under  international law. Iran has sent other boatloads of anti personnel weapons to  Hamas and Hezbollah. In addition, back in 1992, the Iranian leaders planned  and authorized a deadly attack  <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israeli_embassy_attack_in_Buenos_Aires> on Israel's embassy in Argentina. That  bombing, which was carried out by Iranian agents, constituted a direct armed  attack on the state of Israel, since its embassy is part of its sovereign  territory. Moreover, the Iranian government has publicly declared war on  Israel by calling for it "to be wiped off the map."  Under international law, these acts of war -- known as Casus  Belli -- fully justify an Israeli armed response. Even the UN Charter  authorizes a unilateral response to an armed attack. Providing weapons to a  declared enemy in the face of an embargo has historically been deemed an  armed attack under the law of war, especially when those providing the  weapons intend for them to be used against the enemy's civilians. So too is  the bombing of an embassy.  Two other recent events enhance Israel's right use military  means to prevent Iran from continuing to arm Israel's enemies. The recent  disaster in Japan has shown the world the extraordinary dangers posed by  nuclear radiation. If anybody ever doubted the power of a dirty bomb to  devastate a nation, both physically and psychologically, those doubts have  been eliminated by what is now going on in Japan. If Iran were to develop  nuclear weapons, the next ship destined to Gaza might contain a nuclear dirty  bomb and Israel might not intercept that one. A dirty bomb detonated in tiny  Israel would cause incalculable damage to civilian life.  Moreover, the recent killings in Itamar <http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-israel-settlement-killings-20110313,0,3329690.story?track=rss>  of a family including three  children, demonstrate how weapons are used by Israel's enemies against  civilians in violation of the laws of war. Even babies are targeted by those  armed by Iran. Hamas praised the murders.  Israel has the right to prevent its civilians from being  murdered by Iranian weapons, especially weapons of mass destruction. Iran  would have no legal standing to protest a surgical attack on its nuclear  facilities that are designing weapons that could be used to achieve Iran's  declared goal of wiping Israel off the map and killing millions of its  citizens. The leaders of Iran have publicly declared that a nuclear exchange,  killing millions of Jews and Muslims, would be acceptable to them because it  would destroy Israel while only damaging Islam. A suicide nation cannot be  deterred by the threat of retaliation. Israel's only realistic option may be  a preventive military strike of the kind it conducted against Iraq's nuclear  reactor in 1981. That surgical attack may have saved countless lives at the  cost of one single casualty. By the way, Iran too tried to destroy Iraq's  nuclear reactor, but failed. Certainly Israel has the right to do what Iran  itself tried to do -- namely prevent a lethal enemy from developing weapons  capable of mass murder of its citizens.  This is not to say that Israel should attack Iran's nuclear  reactors now. That it has the right to do so does not mean that it should not  wait for a more opportune time. The law of war does not require an immediate  military response to an armed attack. The nation attacked can postpone its  counterattack without waiving its right. The military option should always be  a last resort after all other efforts have failed. It may well be that  efforts to permanently disable Iran's nuclear computers will succeed.  Although it is unlikely that economic sanctions will ever persuade Iran's  ideological zealots to end their nuclear weapons program, a combination of quasi  military, tough economic and diplomatic sanctions may slow it down to a point  where the military option can be postponed. But under no circumstances should  the military option ever be taken off the table. Israel must preserve its  ability to exercise its fundamental right of preventive self defense. If  possible, it should act together with other allies. But if necessary, it has  the right to act alone to protect its citizens. Nearly everybody hopes that  it won't come to that, but hope is not a policy. As George Washington  cautioned in his second inaugural address, "To be prepared for war is  one of the most effectual means of preserving peace."  http://www.huffingtonpost.com/alan-dershowitz/israel-has-the-right-to-a_b_836764.html

An African writer: Gang rape: Is it a race issue? - Crime, UK - The Independent

Gang rape: Is it a race issue?

A high proportion of such attacks appears to be carried out by young black men, according to Metropolitan Police statistics. Sorious Samura investigates this horrendous crime – and what it says about Britain today

Sunday, 21 June 2009

In 1999 I witnessed a gang rape in Sierra Leone. I was forced to watch a group of rebel soldiers taking it in turns to rape a young girl in front of an audience of jeering men. It was the height of the civil conflict and rape had become a devastating weapon of war. When I moved to Britain I believed I had escaped such horrific sexual violence. As my Dispatches investigation tomorrow night shows, I was mistaken. Gang rape is happening here – and what I have found most disturbing as an African is that a disproportionate number of these attacks are being carried out by black or mixed-race young men.
