G. Greenwald: What does Israel fear from media coverage?

 June 1, 2010

Memo form another group list:

Here's the beginning of one of three blog entries on the Israeli attack by Salon blogger Glenn Greenwald in the last couple of days. Greenwald makes the (obvious once he mentions it) point that Israel has also gone to the extraordinary length of holding hundreds of activists incommunicado.

Now why would they do that?

For fun, readers might like to check out his blog 10 hours later (not included here) where he features video of his appearance on MSNBC debating the subject with some of the usual suspects.

In the NYTimes coverage today (6/1) it was mentioned in a paragraph towards the end that Israel claimed it was legal to intercept a ship in international waters if the ship intended to break its blockade.

That was the only mention I could find in The Times article that the aid ship was attacked in international waters.

Interesting that Israel was appealing to law. As one lawyer pointed out (h/t fab) Israel made no mention that it was blockading occupied territory.

What does Israel fear from media coverage?

By Glenn Greenwald

A day after Israeli commandoes raided an aid flotilla seeking to breach the blockade of Gaza, Israel held hundreds of activists seized aboard the convoy on Tuesday . . . .Reuters reported that Israel was holding hundreds of activists incommunicado in and around the port city of Ashdod, refusing to permit journalists access to witnesses who might contradict Israel's version of events.
