Instead, he has attempted to laugh off the controversy. Nor has he given any explanation for this apparent reluctance  -  which has fuelled yet another, even more recherche form of conspiracy: that Obama secretly relishes being attacked over his birthplace because it distracts from the real issues he is struggling with and helps to paint his critics as wild extremists with no real policies of their own.
